Info about the item
I bough this wallet from the (Japanese) Coach website last week for 35.200円. The name of the listing is (translated to English) “New Small Zip Around Wallet With Embroidered Radish Motif”. The wallet came with free shipping and free gift wrapping (since it’s was an early birthday gift to myself I gift wrapped it). It took around 3 workdays from order to the package was delivered.
The wallet is made of polished pebbled leather. It’s fully lined with burgundy finer grained leather and fabric for the bill pocket in the back. Hardware is Coach signature brass hardware.
The wallet have one bill pocket, one small zip pocket for coins, 4 card slots and 2 additional slip pockets (where you can add additional cards). The measurements on the website is listed as: length 9.5cm x width 11.5cm x depth 2cm, which seems accurate.
First impression
The wallet was a bit bigger than I imagined. I’m not sure if it’s the print that make it look smaller on the website, but I was surprised. However, I do like the size.
The right side card pockets (placed over the coin pocket) are tighter and also more narrow than the left ones. With coins filled I think it will be almost impossible to use the left slip pocket. However, this is ok for me.
Quality
The quality looks good. All the stitches are straight and even. The glancing looks great. I know Coach products are machine stitched but even so it’s hard to see where the tread is fastened (this is a pet peeve of mine if I see where the machine stitches have been layered up to fastened the thread).
The embroidery itself are also machine stitched, however it looks very even and good. There is a nice blending of colors and they have even used different thickness of the thread to create some texture which I appreciate. The small “Coach” logo next to the radish looks like it’s heat stamped in.
The leather is smooth and nice and evenly grained. I’m not sure what the dying process is like at Coach but my guess is that the leather is dyed on top rather then dyed trough. I guess this because the color is externally even. Doing a scratch test with my nails on the wallet does not leave any mark so I think it will be very durable.
The inside leather might crack in the middle after long use since it’s gets bend so much. I would love to know other peoples experience with Coach wallets and the quality of the inside burgundy leather.
The zipper is very smooth and feels great. My only complained is that at the top of the zipper (image 5) the fabric will probably start fraying in the future. I will have to be careful with this part.
Usability
I think the wallet is great. I live in Japan where we still use a lot of cash so I’m happy that I can store all my coins, cards and bills in one place. The amount of card slots is perfect for me since I don’t carry that many.
The coin pouch is a bit tight so it might be hard to find the exact coin you are looking for. Also, the coin punch can not double up as an extra card slot since the zipper is not wide enough for a standard card.
I think the size is great but if you are looking for a mini wallet for a mini bag, maybe this might be too big.
The Good
It’s absolutely adorable! I love how I can keep all my money in one place. The quality is feels great for the price (it’s a fully lined leather wallet). I think the leather, especially the outside leather, feels very durable and scratch resistant. The embroidery does look good and even. The stitches and glancing looks perfect. The zipper is smooth. It’s a nice size in the hand. (Bonus points: it does, like I hoped, matches perfectly with my everyday bag from Tideway Japan.) No large logo (this is of course personal, but personal I don’t like logos).
The Bad
The fabric of where the zipper stops/ends does look like is has the risk of start fraying. The coin pocket is very snug and so is the card pockets on the right side. The slip pocket on the right side is for me unusable with coins inside (too snug).
Verdict
I’m so happy that I bought this wallet! I think it’s adorable and I look forward to use it many years to come. I hope that the leather will age beautiful and with age get a nice patina. I think this wallet suits my personality and my lifestyle great. This will be my only wallet and I do not plan to buy any other one. Since it’s brown I think will will looks good all year round (compared to black).
If you look for a wallet with the same specification and size I highly recommend it.
I do not recommend this wallet to someone who like mini wallets/card holders or someone who likes large wallets with a lot of card slots. If you like a compact walled that can carry all of you essentials this one is great.
