Hey everyone ! So many of you have figured it out already that I am kind of super keen about trench coat and just recently got my first ever Burberry trench coat. After sharing couple of pictures I thought about making a review to share my opinions about it, to know if the trench from Burberry is really worth of it compared to other brands.

Disclaimer : first of all I must admit I would have never ever bought a Burberry trench full price from the store because it is way too much expensive for me, and I would rather spend 1850€ for something else, like a beautiful trip somewhere, buying myself a new skill formation to learn something ... I only own this Burberry trench coat because I was lucky enough to come across on a big deal on a second hand clothing website. Other than that we can move further and start our review.

I already own 2 trench coats from Sandro that I bought back in September 2015 and 2020. Indeed for years I was looking for a trench coat as I believe they are amazing coats and looking very awesome and smart. I love the unique style and how they stand out from other kind of coat. It took me time to pick up the right one, I had been spending many time looking for an affordable coat not to expensive, so yes I looked over Zara, River Island, Zalando, Asos, Mango, H&M, and else to find the right item, but every time it was missing something or looking too cheap or unfinished. I knew back in time that Burberry would be the best one but they were also too expensive and inacessible for me at that time, so I had told and convinced myself to forget about Burberry and look somewhere else.

Everytime I tried trench from one of these brands I mentioned above (Zara, Mango, asos...) something wasn't looking right. For instance Zara trench coat were too oversized and the shape and structure of the coat not adapted to my body, the material was also looking and feeling kind of cheap and not beautiful. Buttons looked too fragile and badly stitched / sewn ...

Sandro magnetic blue trench coat :

But then I happened to hear about The Kooples and Sandro brand, they were kind of a miracle for me offering a nice compromise for a good quality trench coat. I had tried several of them before getting super lucky and bought my first Sandro trench coat on 50% sales. What a surprise ! So yes 225€ for my first every Trench coat. At first I didn't pick up the original and beige color but got it in dark blue color. I worn it for 5 long years. So which means a cost per year of 45€. Not so bad:coolio:
When I tried it on, it was the best coat I could wear back in time, very light, very comfortable and nice shape, cut slim (especially for me, I am not the biggest guy). Material looked strong and high quality, many details were already present on the coat. Lenght was not long, just middle of the thighs. I worn this beautiful coat for 5 years and got nice compliment from some people and could already see I was standing out from most people around me. Again back in this time I didn't see many men wearing the trench coat. Fabric is : 100% lamb leather yokes, 100% cotton lining body, 100% polyster lining sleeves.

After 7 years this coat is still looking nice and beautiful. I still need to go to pressing or clean it by a professional but still possible to wear it (though I am not wearing it anymore) so I can still say it was a good deal and worth the money. Very happy about this coat.

Sandro beige trench coat :

5 years latter I decided it would be time for me to own the classic beige color. Again I was looking everywhere and even on Vinted to buy a second hand trench coat, I even remind myself hesitating with a vintage burberry trench. I finally bought a new Sandro trench coat for more than half price because of sales + some bonus from the store so 183€ The coat itself look amazing and great, still close/cut/slim to body shape, but slightly longer (total length reaching my knees this time). Very good material and quality and strong within the time passing by. Once again it offers many details from a great trench coat. But still it is not yet as many and as complete as a Burberry one for me. For instance the buckle from belt and wrist is not complete and don't have the needle that goes in the holes of the belt. Or Sandro has less buttons than Burberry.
Fabric is : Main fabric 100% cotton, body lining 65% acetate and 35% viscose, pocket lining 100% cotton.

In short a very a good coat that still look super nice after 2 years. And I worn it quite a lot. Still worth the money and still strong fabric and material.

Unfortunately I heard from a Sandro's clerk they won't do any more trench coat in the future but I still don't know the reason.

Burberry Kensington long trench coat from Heritage collection :

The master piece. As I said I got super lucky for this one, I found it while stroling on Vinted (a second hand clothing website), a guy was selling this brand new trench coat for 500€ before dropping down price for 350€ ! I couldn't believe it myself ! what a bargain ! Surely the best purchase of the year.

Since we don't have Burberry store close where I am living I decided to contact the Burberry online service to ask for advice. A lady kindly presented me the several trench coats and provided me all measurments and information to know. The website itself also helps you to find your true size with a small software (you must indicate how tall you are, weight, body shape, age...). So with all these informations I knew 46 would be me size (it is close to S which is what I usually wear) and that I wouldn't be wrong paying 350€. And even if the coat is not my size I could have still sold it back to Vinted.

When I received the coat I was feeling very excited and discovered all the amazing details. The classic pattern inside the coat. The collar's back details...
Yes this coat looks very beautiful, is amazing and surely the best one I own. When trying it on it feels amazing, body shape, cut, weight, everything is perfect with this coat ! Fabric : outer 100% cotton, Linning 100% cotton, Sleeve lining 100% cotton. When touching the coat you can really feel the difference of quality with other trench coat from other brands. Compared to Sandro I feel the gabardine materiel being lighter with Burberry which means it is slightly more comfortable to wear the Burberry.

When I pull on the trench coat I very feel super comfortable as if the coat was perfectly taylored to my size and very great to wear. It is a kind of very unique "wearing clothes" experience that definitely prove that sometime when wearing luxury brand clothes it is a big difference with a classic clothe. I really feel the difference in any way.

Conclusion : Should you buy a Burberry Trench coat ?

In short I would answer yes ! Burberry are by far the best trench coat you can wear.

But buy it only and only if you have the money to afford it. Otherwise I would go with a solid no, don't spend almost 2000€ just for a coat, there are so many greater things in this world than just a coat. I mean this is only personal and subjective. But perhaps many on this forum are like me middle class people or not super rich earning lot of money per month. So in this case I would advice you to go for cheaper brand, but not the one like Zara or Mango but go like I did for Sandro and The Kooples, they are for me the best compromise for a very good and yet affordable trench coat ! some other brands between 200€~500€ still do great trench coat like French connections or Banana Republic (if I am correct). But to my own experience Sandro and The Kooples are the best one. The Kooples looks a bit more modern trench coat style while Sandro seems to stick on a more classic look especially with the last trench coat they realised in 2018/2020.

Now if you really want a Burberry, you are lucky like me and keep looking on second hand clothe website like Etsy, Vinted, Vestiaire collective, Ebay ... you might find a very affordable Burberry trench coat, sometime people don't know what they are selling. So if you want a Burberry keep looking every day and when you find one yes ask many questions to the seller (sizing, measurements, close pictures from details of the coat, receipt ...) make sure you bought yourself the best one. You can even contact Burberry to have more informations on Burberry trench coat.

Sizing :
I am myself not too big and not too tall : 1m78 and 62kg, but I find Burberry sizing very accurate and nice. I had some doubts at the very beginning when buying the long lenght, at first I was wondering if it would look a bit too long. My previous trench coat was just above the knees and I loved it thinking it was the perfect length.
This Burberry Kensington long is 115cm long and reach a bit under my knees.
But as time is passing by and I have started to wear it already couple of time I start to love the long length and love how you can structure and shape the coat just by tying the belt on the back. Also this is part of the trench itself to be long and see the coat moving / flying with you as you walk or as the wind is blowing.

Then I must talk about how versatile the coat and how much you can play with different details and parts of the coat to give a different look and style.

It is for me the only coat that offers so many options and way of styling. A trench coat goes great with everything ! I say everything! Any kind of outfit or clothes. It is truly amazing. How ? Just play with the coat it self. Pop up the colar, tie the belt behind, close the buttons ... whatever will look great and whatever you wear by adding the trench coat you will instantly elevate and enhance your look !

See the next pictures. I am now showing some outfits and ideas about how to style and wear the trench. Let me know what kind of look you like. But you will see it instantly change the look from one picture to another one.

20220423_132942.jpg
Here a very effortless casual look breaking the strictness of the trench with trainers, jeans and a colorful shirt. I simply pull on the trench, leave it open and just tied the belt behind with a classic knot to make it closer to my body shape.

20220423_133100.jpg
Now a more formal and business look for meeting or else. The trench is definitely in this situation the most suitable coat I got to find. Again I let the coat open and I made a knot with the belt behind the coat for a slimmer look.

20220423_133131.jpg20220423_133157.jpg

2 mid casual and formal look : the trench coat formality/strictness is broken by the trainers and an open white shirt and also by pulling up the sleeves for a more relaxed look. Just class/smart enough and as the same time just very casual like if you just go out with friends and don't want a too much tailored look but rather looking for a more lay back look.

Part II review of the Burberry trench coat :

20220406_200832.jpg

A relaxing and more tailored look at the same time. I simply buttoned up each side of the coat on itself and tied the belt behind. I like that look it avoid the coat to move too much and keep the coat closer to your body.

20220407_172308.jpg20220407_172540.jpg
This one of the most casual and relaxing look. Just wear a hoodie and it immediately break the strictness of the coat. Very amazing look once again.

From behind and on the side. So you can see how I attached the belt and how just by popping up the collar it can look very different.

Part III review of the Burberry trench coat
20220419_141238.jpg20220419_141205.jpg

20220424_121910.jpg
Details difference between the sleeves buckle from Sandro (left) and Burberry (right). You can see something is missing on Sandro.

20220406_235902.jpg
That kind of details and pattern are very unique from Burberry. You will not find a collar with so much detail and care.

20220407_095310.jpg
The inside of the coat offer the beautiful pattern.

So many small details that make Burberry unique coat and high quality.

Great review and I really like your styling.

You look great in both, but I think I like the Burberry more on you and looks great with your personal style.

I have vintage/new Burberry tranches and coats as well as others. Mine compare pretty well to each other. My only high-street/middle-market is Cordings which is rubberised cotton (which means I don't need it re-waterproofed). My Gucci and YSL are, as one might have presumed, more fashion than have all the practical details which ensure rain/shower proofing. A also have Ralph Lauren that's just white cotton-twill, more Summer coat rather than trench. I had a long Burberry at one point but I sold it, I think it looked good and kept the rain out but the length didn't feel like me.

Your review is obviously more Burberry British heritage/designer-vintage v Sandro/French, 1980s, high-street, middle-market. Everybody's comparisons will be different.

There are some less expensive options that are as good as Burberry. People should look at country clothing sites (particularly British or Irish) for practical, long-lasting options that are comparative to B.

Sorry to hear Sandro are not doing more tranches for men but there are a couple of options for women.

All the trenches look great on you! You wear them so well. I have to admit, I love Burberry’s the most. I just pulled the trigger on one too (from their outlet in Spain). I admittedly don’t have an eye for detail in clothes but there was just something special about the fit of all the Burberry trench coats I tried on vs the other brands so I think it’s worth the splurge for a forever coat.

Definitely the fit from Burberry trench coat is very unique and wonderful experience. It is tough to explain and describe it but you really feel the difference.

Like I said every time I was trying another trench coat from Zara, Mango, Massimo Dutti or else... something was missing, the fit wasn't perfect. It was either a bit too big/oversized, not perfectly tailored to my body shape or the length of the coat wasn't right. But when wearing a Burberry it instantly feel that damn "feeling" of "woah that is the right and best coat and fit to wear!"

Which Burberry trench did you get ? Do you have any pictures ? How long have you been wearing it and at what frequency? I am also a bit scared to wear it to much and reduce faster its longevity :amuse:

Thank you for your words and compliments.

Yes my review is mostly based on trenchcoat I have owned and some I have tried from Zara or elsewhere. So someone could have done a different review. But I still believe that if you are looking for a classic and the original trench coat you must go for Burberry. There are items that goes only with one brand  like Mont Blanc pen or Laguiole knife.

In the last part of you message you talk about country clothing sites (particularly British or Irish)? Do you know the other brands or websites?

I bet if Sandro doesn't do anymore trench coat it is because they didn't sell many of them or that it is not so trendy for people.

Woah you have a lot of trench ! Would ve nice to see pictures of them ! Do you wear them often?

I especially love the last 3 trench. The leather one and the one from Gucci it looks great one !:heart::heart::loveeyes: from each year is your beige Gucci trench ?

I am not really fan of these trench from Mackintosh or Mark and Spencer ... again it looks like something is missing from an original trench coat like the gunflap.

I have quite a large wardrobe  .

I like gun-flaps, cape backs, storm tabs and epaulets. The military they are the more they seem to suit me

The beige trench is from 2016. It's truly beautiful, I love the leather buckles. There was also one from the centenary here but I didn't like the writing on the back, Gucci have one this season, looks more oversized and vintage inspired here

Thank you for taking the time to write your detailed review.

I'm sure you have. Lots of people wonder if a Burberry trench coat is worth it.

I've no idea. I just have a lot of everything, and good quality lasts :D

The downside of Macs is how incredibly warm they are which someone might not be aware of! I bought mine blind from an online shop and it is warm enough to use in the middle of Canadian winter.

Your aquascutum coat is oh so fabulous!
