I've read a couple threads that you would actually have to be at a Hermes boutique to purchase one. You cannot call the boutique & have them do a charge send correct? Can you go into a boutique & they can special order one for you?

Hey Kellybag, no, those colors would not be more. Togo is the least expensive and you can get any color at any price.

Guilloche HW, I believe, is more expensive.

Each Hermes boutique is different with their phone policies. I wish they were all the same but they aren't. :(

Thanks Gigi, I can NEVER spell "courroies!!" I forgot about the sizes 45, 50, and the REALLY huge one too. So much info.!

No problem Greentea! :amuse: Yeah, those HAC above 45cm are HUGE!!! I don't think any woman in their right mind would buy something like that for everyday use! :D

Kelly - here in Switzerland a black/gold 30 cm with palladium in togo or clemence costs around 7400 - 7800 Swiss Francs (approximately, 6050 US) depending on which leather. I'm not sure the price makes a difference for the color, but the waiting time yes as colors are more difficult to find.

La Vanguardia is right about the waiting time for certain colors. From what I know, the waiting time is substantially longer for the classic or popular colors like Black, Gold, Blue Jeans...which are most sought-after. Almost every woman want their starter Birkin to be a classic color...:D

I think the price of Birkin is largely dependent on the leather, not the color. For example, a Black clemence 30cm Birkin would cost the same as a Blue Jean clemence 30cm Birkin...But of course, it also depends on where you buy your Birkin. From what I know, the best price is in France & Europe. The most expensive place to get your Birkin is Japan. In Tokyo, a 30cm leather Birkin is at least US$8,000 :push:

Jessdressed, this is largely true. But I do know that Hermes has exceptions for their regular customers or VIPs. These are VERY good customers who spent lots of $$$ at their stores. The SAs actually reserve bags or new items for them & wait for them to pick up at the stores. Sometimes they will ship the bags if the customers can't pick them up. They porbably have the CC of such customers on file.

From what I know, special orders are usually for their regulars or VIPs only.

Can you try to offer some sort of down payment? A substantial down payment (~50%)? Wouldn't it be lucrative for Hermes to have guaranteed buyers?
Clanalois, I have not come across any Hermes store that accepts downpayment...it could be their store policy not to do that.

I do know of some boutiques that do that...e.g. Fendi and Chanel Boutiques in my country does that for some IT bags. e.g. Fendi Spy and Chanel 2.55 Re-issue.

Sometimes it is not necessarily the best thing...I know of someone who got her 50% downpayment held by Fendi for 8 months before she got her Spy. Good lord!!!

How much of a savings is it if you purchase an identical bag in Europe vs. Stateside?
I guess you would have to factor in if the exchange rate is in your favor or not...that is another issue.

One more thing...I read something conflicting above...are the classic colors harder to come by or colored Birkins? I could understand the demand for the classics making them harder to come by, but I also feel they must produce more of them and less of colored bags making colors probably difficult to find.

My take is that they are all hard to get! They produce more in the popular colors, but a lot of people are in line for these. Also, it really varies from store to store. I'd just talk to the SA and get his/her opinion of what comes in most often. Mine is trying to talk me into SOMETHING potiron. And I'm listening... :)

KB, you make a very good point. The exchange rate does play a part...which fluctuates from time to time.

KB, that is certainly the case for the store that I go to...I wouldn't say the classics are harder to come by. Assuming that the quantity of classic and colored Birkins are about the same, but because the demand for the classics are so much more, the wait would be correspondingly longer...unless you are given priority & get bumped up on the list. :D

In any case, if you do know of an Hermes store that has a shorter waitlist for the classic colors, please share!!! TA! :smile1:

Kelly - At the Hermes store here where I live, the SA said that they receive the classic colors from time to time. But for instance, they haven't received a potiron in 2 years.
La Van, thanks for sharing :smile1: Looks like Switzerland & maybe Europe is a good place for those who are looking for classic color bags.

In the store that I frequent, I see quite a lot of potiron, fuchsia & turquoise bags. hmm...I'm not too sure about this, but I think this could be due to the orders placed by respective Boutique Managers for their stores.

Hi guys! Maybe most of you know this already:

When I went to the Hermes store today, my SA said that the craftsmen who make the Birkins and Kellys are usually trained for 7 years. They first start to make the little leather goods, then progress to making belts, then to wallets, and then to other bags. Finally, after 7 years they are skilled enough to make the Birkins and Kellys.
