🗣️ How do we feel about receiving returned items from both Dooney & ILD??​


I purchased the mini Flo satchel in navy, a few days before Christmas, on Dooney.com. I chose the free economy shipping, received it on Thursday. With the holidays, I expected the hiccup in receiving the bag.

However, I’m a bit disappointed though, because with the helpful, expert eyes of @mushroomNgrass, she confirmed the bag I received is a return. Now, I’m not one to get too upset by that, after all 98% of my collection is pre-loved. But I feel a bit disappointed with the way it was packaged and shipped to me (see pix).

Overall, the bag was not damaged, no scratches, no dents. The Flo leather is consistent throughout, and no odd texture differences.

I feel that if I’m purchasing a bag for $250, it should be re-wrapped to their original standards - even if the bag is a return. My bag was placed in the box with no other packaging around the bag; just left to roll around the box.

I ordered a michael kors collection bag once from one of the boutiques....it came just kind thrown in the box so I get what you're saying but if your bag is in perfect condition I think I'd try to just put it out of my mind

It isn't just you - all their bags are shipped that poorly. The reviews prove the majority of buyers (myself included) feel the same way as you do. D&B used to pack them so nicely & it was a pleasure just opening the box. Now the packing looks cheap & hurried & that takes the fun out of the first visual when you open the box.

Here's my take:
It would be nice if the handbags were packaged with padding and tissue paper and
we got a luxury experience when we opened the box. Or at a minimum we felt
the handbag was protected and well treated. But that's not the way it is these days,
unless you pay big bucks. And even then, you can't count on it.

If you bag is in good condition and you bought it on sale, then I'd say you did well.
Don't let the shipping and packaging affect your love for the handbag or stress you
out.

As for the handbag possibly being a return....even in high end boutiques, the handbag
you buy could be a return. They may or may not wrap it beautifully. It may or may not
be in perfect condition either. And even in department stores the bags we buy are
handled by others, and may be returns.

I was watching a YT video recently about a
$5000 designer handbag that someone received from a very upscale brand boutique.
It had defects.... pen marks and popped stitches and scratches. Brand new bag,
ordered as a Christmas present directly from a sales associate.

I know we deserve perfection for the money we are spending.
But that's not the world we live in....espeically with online shopping.
The best I hope for is that the company will stand behind their merchandise
if there is a problem. When they don't, I take my money elsewhere in the future.

Sigh. I buy preloved bags. I buy new bags. I really don’t want to pay for a NEW bag, and receive a used bag. When I looked at the pictures of the navy mini, I saw the bag smiling already. That doesn’t happen immediately receiving a new bag. the bag could have come from a store and been a display, who knows.
now ive opened plenty of boxes from dooney where the box was ridiculously large for the size of the items inside. As long as the bag isn’t damaged, I won’t complain.

Well your navy mini is a keeper in my eyes, really beautiful. Smooth all over. I would keep it. I do understand how you feel about the way it was shipped, the disappointment. I’m not only the president I’m also a client. I’m sure you have seen many many YouTube videos where they open the box and there is a returned item in the box. Most of the time, if there are no defects, the item is kept.

I have been there with my pre ordered chestnut tilton. That’s the only time Ive had any kinda issue with anything Ive ordered from Dooney.com, I❤️D, or ILD eBay. LJ gave me advice as I ranted and raved about the used bag they sent me. I didn’t think about how when we shop in store, how many items are returned and we think nothing of it. LJ really made sense and changed the way I saw receiving a returned item when shopping online. Thank you for that L.J. I kept the used chestnut Tilton, and because I was disappointed I pre ordered another Tilton in navy. I love both bags.


I could not lie to you when you had concerns of it being returned.

I hope I didn’t come off snobby, because that wasn’t my intention, nor am I snob about anything. Trust me on that! I’ve bought some rough bags from the resale market, and have cleaned them up to near pristine condition. And I’m very appreciative of @mushroomNgrass letting me know that it was a return. Thankfully the bag is in great shape! She is a keeper, that’s for sure.

I just wanted to get some feedback from you frequent & seasoned DB shoppers.

Nah you didn’t come off snobby. For a person, say that’s never bought anything from dooney, who doesn’t know what a shipment from dooney looks like, they wouldn’t know their bag was not new. I would not know what to expect, first time ordering.

You were excited to get a new handbag. Then the box came and you were disappointed.
We've all been there. And even tho the handbag was in great condition and you would
have picked it off the shelf yourself in the store, the packaging and presentation
took away some of the joy and made you question the purchase. You had a right to
be excited and to get a handbag that bought you joy.

Unfortunately, we have to deal with these situations far too often. It's part of
collecting handbags and trying to find good buys. Don't let the superficial stuff
stress you or ruin your enjoyment of your new handbag. I've decided that as long
as the handbag gets to me safely and is in good condition, it's a win. I just try to ignore
the packaging issues. What gets me upset is when the handbag is defective....
like missing stitches....especially when the bag was obviously repackaged and has
an inspection tag inside.

@KiltyR45 & @mushroomNgrass - No snobbishness in wanting what you paid for - a brand new bag! The plastic wrapped bags are usually OK if they haven't come in contact with anything sharp. I didn’t buy a bag on ebay that was wrapped & being sold as brand new because I could see tears in the plastic & the seller gave an odd reason for not unwrapping it to photograph. As far as buying from Macy's or other vendors, we really don't have any way of knowing if DB is re-wrapping returns & shipping them to those stores either. All we can do is look. I personally NEVER accept a bag off the shelf - have them pull one from the back, which the SA should have no problem doing. MKors won't (at least a few years back) would not sell display merchandise. If you want the bag the SA immediately goes to the back & brings out a brand spanking new one, all packaged & not handled.
Macys used to be Top Dog of retailers but in my experience, Belk ships out nicer packaged items faster than Macy's - or even Nordstrom. The differences I s'pose are all just part of retail.
Kilty - your bag is indeed gorgeous!

Call and ask if there are any extra discounts. i will call tomorrow and ask if they have any pale blue minis before I order… it’s not looking good on site, colors are disappearing like hotcakes. I can’t order until Friday… no worries tho, if it’s meant for me to have, I WILL have it.
I see a flo cooper for $135 and a ginger Toscana domed satchel, and a medium zip crossbody that I can get for what I spend on the minis…
