Just a quickie, have been through the Paris threads but can't find the answer.

A friend is going to Paris for a short period of time and would like to know the quickest, safest and cheapest way to go from CDG to FSH (with suitcase!). She will be staying at the Sofitel Le Faubourg but as been advised that a hotel-arranged transfer will be far more expensive than a taxi or metro, despite being the most hassle free option of course.

I know the Metro is pretty good (to Madeleine?) but will it be safe and ok to do with a suitcase?

TIA!

From CDG into town the RER is the cheapest option but not the safest with a big orange bag shouting expensive purchase within, however with a suitcase it is absolutely fine.

In December, I took a taxi from Le Meurice Hotel ( very close to FSH) to the airport and it was fast and realitively inexpensive, maybe €35? ( should note the the traffic was not bad) Enabled me to get to FSH and George V, faster!:smile1:

Thank you. It seems it may be about 50 euros (£40) to go from CDG to her hotel via taxi. I think I might suggest she takes a taxi as she will be tired and it's not worth the hassle with a case, especially if there are safety issue. The first time I went to Paris, I caught a man trying to pickpocket me, I just want her to be safe, might offer to pay her taxi myself!

ETA I just read hopiko's response. Thank you, I was just reaching the same conclusion!

the cost of a taxi will depend quite a bit on traffic...when we arrived at CDG in january, we hit morning rush hour traffic and it took us over an hour to get to our hotel, costing around $100. there was minimal traffic on the ride back to CDG and the fare was around $65.

another option is to take the air france shuttle and depending on where the hotel is in relation to their stops is quite easy to manage with a suitcase. i've taken it from CDG to etoile and then walked to my hotel.

but to totally different ends of the price spectrum...:smile1:

The first time I went to Paris I navigated the metro with my suitcase.. Never again since then with luggage. There are so many stairs and it's hard to get through with your luggage quickly enough after you validate your ticket. It was a complete mess for me..

Thank you :smile1:. It's about half an hour walk from Etoile to her hotel/FSH. Maybe a combination of Air France Shuttle (to Etoile) and a taxi from Etoile to the Sofitel would work?

Oh sounds awful :hugs: From my experience with the London Subway, I thought it would be difficult for her. Looks like the Metro is out till after the luggage has been dropped off!

There are a number of options. I am in Paris several times a year and I have tried them all!!! I am pretty adventurous and am comfortable trying everything. My thoughts....

Taxis are great when there are two of you and you can share the $$. I usually land at CDG alone, though, and I often find myself still debating what method to use as I pass Customs!

The best thing about a taxi is the fact that it will get you right to the door of your hotel. If you are tired and jet lagged it is great. It is, for me, not so great when the traffic is going at a snail's pace and you are watching the meter tick away. Tick...tick...tick...there goes my FSH money!!

I have taken the train (the RER). It is the seediest option--the train from the airport is not exactly elegant and you do have to consider pickpockets. Utterly jet-lagged tourists make easy pickings! My problem--I either have to change trains to get a metro to my hotel (then deal with stairs), or get off at a major stop like St. Michel...head up to the street, and grab a taxi from there. One benefit--if you have little time, it is pretty fast. Love whipping into the city faster than the traffic. Not for the faint of heart or the weak or those who love luxury, nor for those who cannot handle dragging their luggage through awkward passages.

A middle ground that I use most often is the Air France bus. Clean, restful, safer than the train. In bad traffic it will at least take the same time to the core of the city as a taxi. Check out where it stops. I usually grab the Air France bus, get my suitcases, and grab a taxi to the door of my hotel. The bus loads your bigger suitcases underneath and you carry your carryon on board. The only awkward part, depending on which stop you choose, can be finding a taxi. I do this the most because it is safer than the train but cheaper than a taxi.

One note--when I am on the train, or even if I take the Air France bus and know I will run a block to a taxi, I have a suitcase system. Keep in mind--I travel with one carryon, a purse (usually in a Longchamp bag), and two of the most massive suitcases made. I arrive with the two biggies empty and leave with them packed with stuff. When I land and go to baggage, I put my carryon in one empty suitcase and my purse in another. Minimizes how many objects I would be awkwardly juggling, and minimizes the risk of getting pickpocketed. My hunch is that pickpockets would be less inclined to wrestle a massive suitcase out of my grasp...

Hope this helps. You know your friend's personality, budget, and stress risk the best!

Oh--I always arrange a shuttle to get from my hotel back to the airport. Much cheaper than a taxi and reliable.

What a great response! Thank you so much Perigord

I thought it would be easy finding a taxi at Etoile as it's a major hub. If there's none there she can always start walking! I think the plane lands at 9am, so she should come out by 10 maybe? Does that change things? Will the traffic be ok by then i.e taxi would be not too expensive, or do you think the bus/taxi at Etoile option would be better?

Traffic into Paris from CDG can be bad up until approx 11:30 in the morning, so you would be looking at at least 50 euros to the Sofitel. Could be more. You'd be better off opting for the bus and taxi option as suggested by Perigord. Taxis are relatively easy to find at l'Etoile, but again it depends on the day, I remember the day I bought my first birkin at George V, I struggled to find a taxi and had to walk quite a bit with the big carrier bag!

Thank you LittleH - there's so much experience here. I will direct her to this thread so she can read for herself :smile1:

I hope your friend found her way! I took a taxi from CDG to my hotel right on FSH and it was 40 euro and so easy. I was very tired, and knew the metro wasn't going to work. I did take the Metro from Concorde the rest of my stay and it was lovely!
