As I am relatively new to TPF - and have since garnered more knowledge on how to appreciate and treat our bags ( I have been very sloppy with them)... I have a question as to the legality of illegitimate repairs. I live in a very humid country and therefore some of my "older" bags which have leather or leather treated interiors deteriorate (become sticky, flakes off - and generally renders the bag useless) - this happens not only with the LV - but with the Fendi - Gucci - Dior - etc with the similar linings. For the LV which I had bought in Austria - it was perfect until one day my vernis wallet got stuck to the lining and took on the colour! I took it to the LV store and they told me that there is nothing they can do about it and advised me to "air" the bags every so often. So instead of giving it up, there is a "luggage" repairer who can redo the bag and put in a fabric lining - which I did. Now the question is - my LV which was bought authentically but repaired illegally (since LV did not want to do it) - what is my bag called now - not a fake I hope. As for the LV bag - I dont feel "nice" carrying it any more but with the Dior (which is a soft overnighter) - I am carrying it to death everytime I travel.
Anyway, from then on - I only buy bags that have fabric linings. Any comments appreciated.

You are aloud to alter your bag in any way. It is yours! You just cannot say that LV made the repairs if they didn't (as in this case) :flowers: If you ever go to sell it, make sure you are as descriptive as possible concerning the alterations so there is no confusion.

I agree that you will just be honest that it is an authentic bag but the repair was done by a local repair shop. The only thing is, once an outside source had repaired their bag, LV will not honor the "warranty" of the product.

I just bought a Musette Tango for an unbelievable price. It is in a very good shape, other then the inside pocket stitching is coming off on one side. I keep debating to have it repair by the LV shop but the repair will cost more than the cost of the item (yes, it is authentic and that cheap.) So I decided to sew it myself. It is on the inside, the thread color is a very good match.

If I ever sell it, I doubt the buyer would complain because the PRICE IS JUST RIGHT!

I see no problem with it. I actually have two bags that need to be repaired. One's vintage and I probably won't go to LV to get it repaired. It'd probably be way more than I want to spend but I really like the bag. I don't plan on selling it. The other I will take to LV because it it the entire handle and I'd rather LV replace it entirely.

I would rather have my bags repaired and useable than deteriorating and useless. If the bag is authentic, it's authentic, no question about it. Especially if you don't sell your babies. But like the others stated, if you ever change your mind and decide to sell, just be as descriptive and upfront as possible.

I think it is great that you have a craftsman that is able to insert a fabric liner on your bag. I don't see anything wrong with it. The bag is still authentic. And, as other posters have stated just mention the alteration if you ever sell--as a buyer I like to know about ALL aftermarket treatments bags might have had right down to if the previous owner treated the leather with a protectant.

Thanks everyone. No, I dont sell my bags. Its just my own feeling that this bag is not "whole". Kinda hard to explain this feeling.

I understand what you mean even though I also don't have the exact words to describe it. I've never had a bag need repairst that LV wasn't able to do. I think if that happened, I would just sell the bag "as is" and move on to a different one.

I get that, it wouldn't feel like LV to me. AND you can never have LV do any work on it. I made the mistake, when I was very young, to have a zipper repaired by someone other than LV and by doing that they would never do any future work on the bag.
