Question for white gold e-ring owners

i got my e-ring in white gold because the jeweler actually recommended getting white gold over platinum. now after doing some research on the internet, i'm wishing i had gotten a platinum setting.

anyway, how often do you ladies find that you need to replate your white gold engagement ring? i have another white gold ring and it's been 3 years already and i find that it still looks the same as when i first got it and doesn't have any yellow tints.

My fiance and I got white gold for my engagement ring in order to bring the price down into our range (we paid cash, refused to go into debt over a ring). I've only had it since february though so not long enough to be any help with the plating thing.

I have other white gold pieces that still look the same as the day I got them and I've had them for years and years. I guess it depends on how much wear and tear it will get.

Not e ring , but a ring I used to wear everyday in white gold, and never removed, needed plating at least once every 1-2 years. When it gets to a point that you don't like what you see- too many marks and very little shine- you jut get it for re plating. Pretty awesome that yours is still in good shape after 3 years! Do you wear it everyday?

I wonder if things have changed in the white gold world. I have some jewelry from at least 20 years ago that are white gold and they have never needed re-plating. I wonder if the actual white gold alloy was better then and they have cheapened it somehow to require the plating. I know rhodium plating gives a brilliant finish, but geez it sounds like a pain!

I don't have much white gold, but my DH's wedding band is white gold and needs to be dipped about every 8 months (although that doesn't happen). I depends on each person's ph balance, so you won't really know until you've worn it for awhile.

i only wear it maybe a few times per week but i'm pretty rough with it.

at least i THINK it looks as shiny as when i first got it. but i do notice that when i compare it side by side with the new e-ring, it looks dark =(

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you like how it looks then just get it dipped whenever it bothers you. If your previous white gold ring hasn't bothered you in 3 years and you only just noticed that maybe it isn't as shiney as it used to be because you put it right next to the new one, then I'd say you're fine. :smile1:

You will know when your ring is really ready to be plated. Would suggest not to do more than once a year if possible - your ring will be buffed by a jewelers hand tool prior to plating which is removing a bit of gold (albeit tiny bit) but would watch that you don't do too much. It seems that every wg ring will wear differently - some can go for really long periods and others need to be plated more often (especially on the bottom of the shank that takes all of the wear) than others - even on the same person.

I really don't find it too bothersome to get it replated, but I'm amazed about the price increase. I got a replating (on the ring I mentioned) and payed 10 euros when last year it was around 3 or 4. it is more than 100%...

I've had mine for 5 years without replating. I get it cleaned every 6 months. I assume platinum would be less of a headache, but then it's supposed to be softer, so I don't know if I will ever replace it with platinum.

Actually, I don't think replating a white gold ring with rhodium is any less of a hassle than having to polish a platinum ring after the patina builds up, unless you appreciate the look of the patina.

I knew a lady at a school I taught at that ended up getting platinum based on all she had read about it, but found out that the patina really bugged her. So in her case, she would have been better off with white gold. It really comes down to personal preference and what kind of look you like.

I have a 6 year guarantee with my white gold e-ring and it gets checked by the jeweller every 6 months. It always gets replated at this visit also free of charge. The jeweller actually noticed that the claws had worn down at the last visit so they had to re-do them for me which cost $160 - so a bit of a pain but more of a pain if my princess cut diamonds fell out I suppose.:smile1:

My e-ring lasted 9 years before we upgraded and I NEVER once had to dip it. I have another white gold ring that I've only had to dip once in 6.5 years.

I love white gold.

I've had mine for five years in December and it's just now getting to where I think it should be replated. It isn't bad but it's starting to have a yellow tinge to it, so I think that I'll probably get it dipped sometime in the next few months.
