I have a bit of a horror story. Went into my local Cartier boutique to look at some new potential purchases when the SA told me they have new bolts for my love bracelet and would I like to have it serviced? I specifically said I would if they wouldn't polish it. She said they would do the very minimum.

Well, weeks later I have my bracelet and I can tell you it wasn't the minimum. The edges are definitely softer and I'm so upset because I bought this bracelet as a memorial for beloved corgi when he passed (his name is engraved on the inside) so I wanted it to stay exactly the same, scratches and all.

For anyone else who has had their love bracelet polished (by their will or against), do you have any advice or information about this service? Is this considered normal?

Thank you in advance.

Hi! I'm really sorry this happened to you. I don't know what your recourse is here, because you can't "unpolish" it, but it will develop a patina again over time and now you're less likely to use it with the new screws. I know you'll have the same beautiful memories of your sweet boy - like the bracelet, he'll always be with you.

Hi. Thank you. I've talked to management and they say to bring it in and they will see what they can do to resolve the situation.

I could tolerate the refinish if it hadn't completely changed the integrity of the bracelet. Unfortunately whoever handled it did a poor job and the bracelet has completely lost its definition to the point I don't want to wear it (the polishing left marks on the edges, the screws lost their definition, the surface isn't even, the list of problems goes on and on). I'll update once I've gotten to the boutique to see what kind of resolution they might have for me. For now I'm not willing to accept things as they are.

I have no experience, I just wanted to say that I am so sorry that this has happened to you. I inherited my grandmother's Hawaiian bracelet and her name was engraved on the inside. I had to have the bracelet repaired and I specifically asked for no polishing due to the name engraved in the middle. Lo and behold it came back without her name-it was polished out. I don't know why they write up repair receipts when the person repairing doesn't read them. I feel how upset you are and I'm just so sorry.

Thank you so much for your message. It's terrible what they did to your grandmother's bracelet. You would hope that people would take more care with such sentimental pieces.

In this case I'm not even sure if my request to leave the finish alone was even given to the service team. I suspect not, hence the boutique's willingness to address the situation. We'll see how it goes. I'll update as soon as I can go in (I currently have Covid and while I'm upset I'm not upset to the point I would go anywhere while I'm still infectious)

When i did the screw change last year, the SA told me in the beginning (when they introduced this service), it was COMPULSORY that customer had to agree to polish down the bracelet. I found this really unaccceptable but she said that was many customers' feedback thus they do not impose anymore later part. In the service receipt, she did mention "no polishing".

Sorry to hear what has happened and hope Cartier has some good resolution for you. Hugs.

Ugh. So sorry. I think we can all sympathize.

I have never had my love serviced but did ask for my tank not to be polished. It was written on the slip. And it very much came back buffed. I was happy with the result though fortunately. There must be a reason this happens. I can’t imagine they would blatantly miss this. Although that one person that had her brand new brushed love polished to shiny has me scratching my head….

I am confident Cartier will find a solution for you.

I'm sorry sorry that happened. Unfortunately, I've heard this has happened before at Cartier. It's almost as if they don't actually read the service slip. I'm also very sorry for the loss of your beloved corgi.
On a side note ~ I did the same when I lost my beloved mini schnauzer, I purchased the small love and had his name engraved on the inside. I love knowing I "have" him with me.
Whatever the outcome is (keeping as is or replacement) please let the bracelet still serve as a reminder of the love you and your fur baby had ~ patina or not it still honors him.

As promised, I have a final update on the situation. Cartier decided to replace the bracelet which I received today (with a fresh engraving to honor my corgi.) It took a little longer than expected, but overall I'm very satisfied with the outcome. The boutique leadership has been excellent throughout this process and I'm extremely grateful. As things stand now, I feel a lot better about shopping there again in the future.

Edited to add: I'd also like to thank everyone here on TPF for their support. I really couldn't have gotten through this without your help.

Edited again to add: the replacement was made as a special exception by my boutique. Others in similar situation may experience other outcomes.
