Hi everyone! I have a question about resizing of rings, but a little back story first...(sorry for the length)

Earlier this year, I went through a health issue and the medication I was given made my fingers swollen. It's been two months since I've stopped taking the medication (since it didn't work for my condition) and my fingers have not gone back down. My ring size was originally 4.25 and I got remeasured at a 5. I've had a really tough time emotionally with my illness, which is still unresolved, and although it sounds a bit silly, I was also really upset not being able to wear my rings.

My DH and I decided to go ahead and have my rings resized since I haven't been able to wear them for most of this year. Since my engagement ring and band were custom made at different places not close to where we currently live, we took them to a really reputable, local jeweler where my DH got his wedding band and I have had other jewelry reset.

My engagement ring is a simple halo (no diamonds on the band) and they said that it was easy to resize. However, my wedding band is an eternity band with alternating diamonds and sapphires. They told us that they could resize it, but they would need to add a metal piece to extend it, or another diamond. We decided to go with the metal since I figured no one would see it.

I've never had any resizing done before, and they quoted us $250 plus tax. Is that reasonable considering my rings are both platinum and given the time/effort?

Thanks for reading!

Im actually shocked they can mess with the eternity band at all, but I do think that price is fair since they are totally altering the structure of the band. I was wondering if they couldn't shave out any of the inside. I don't know how deep your sapphires are but your diamonds aren't that large in that band. I LOVE your band, so I hope they can do this without ruining the look of it. I wonder how much it would be to remake in that size. Though I suppose obviously well more than $250

I hate that you are in such a bad place right now, illness sucks, esp when it's so hard to effectively treat and understand. Big hugs!

I'm sending hugs your way too! It stinks going through any health issues :hugs:

I think $250 sounds good too and also that depends on where you live. I went to a reputable jeweler in MD, where competition isn't as high as in NYC, to get a 14k gold ring resized.

When I went to pick it up it was something like $115 with tax. I had to remind the new SA that their store policy was that when you buy a ring from their store you have a year to get it resized for free and she was happy to comply. But, I had no idea what it cost! So I guess $250 for two rings, one being complicated, sounds fine.

Here in NYC I have a jeweler who does simple resizing anywhere from $15-$50. I guess it just depends on where you are.

Suli I'm sorry to hear about your illness and sorry to hear your medication did not work. I too have had a long illness that after over 3 years I finally have a diagnosis. I have lost 70 pounds so far and have had to have my rings resized twice and now I'm looking at a third time.Mine are the Lace rings by Michael B. The first time he charged me 250. In February he charged me 300. They were just sent back to Michael B. again yesterday. My Cartier trinity ring was going to cost me 350.00 so I'm selling it instead. IMHO they are charging you a reasonable amount. I know it feels like a fortune (it has to me anyway), but like you I want to be able to wear my rings. I hope they can give you a diagnosis and medication that will help you soon. :)
