So, I have recently discovered I am allergic to something in the purple MAC eyeshadows I've been using off and on. I get allergic conjunctivitis (pink eye) whenever I wear them and it usually takes a day or so before it resolves. The culprits are: Beauty Marked, Sketch, Nocturnelle, and Star Violet. It could be any one or all of these, but I'm guessing I have an allergy to red dye as I've done some research and see it is quite common for people to be allergic to purple eyeshadows in general because of the red dye.

Since purples are favorites of mine (I have brown/green/gold hazel eyes and dark hair, and purple really makes my eyes pop & makes the green stand out and also purple is one of my favorite colors), does anyone have any idea of any purple shadows that are safe/non-allergenic? I haven't tried minerals or brands like Clinique, Almay, Josie Maran, etc. because I have heard of people still being allergic to purples in these brands/types.

Any help is appreciated. Especially if you've gone through this before and are having success with something now!

TIA!

I'm allergic to purple shadows, too - the red dye issue. The only purple I can wear is Chanel's Fauve. I love it since I haven't been able to wear purple in so long. It's not a true purple - more a taupe purple. My eye color is similar to yours. Good Luck!

maybe if you lay down a lid primer or something before hand it will prevent any from falling off your lids into your eyes and also create a barrier from the lid?

Thanks for your input, I may try that shade. I'm sorry you're also allergic. :(

I ALWAYS use primer. :( Doesn't help. I also tried to keep my eyes clear/flushed with eye drops frequently the last time I tried the purples and that didn't help either. I'm at my wits end. My lids don't react, just inside my eyes.

Me too! I can't wear that red dye and I can't wear a strong blue dye either, in fact, blue is worse for me than red. So purple is a huge no for me. I get that conjunctivitis (pink eye) too -- that's serious!

I just don't wear reddish or strong blue colours. Not even going to try anymore. I'm too old for it anyway.

An allergy is an allergy and its best to avoid wearing those products all together. Try to sample different brands, but it may be the same thing. By continuing to wear the shadows you react to, it will only continue to get worse. What about Bare Minerals?

I also heard Lush will be coming out with a makeup line soon.

My other suggestion is to use an eyeliner stick instead of powder..?

And perhaps the pricier brands like Dior or Cle de Peau may use a different grade dye that you can tolerate.

Oh and I just found this link which uses only fruit pigments.

Eek! Sorry to hear that. It seems as though this is quite a common allergy. It's crazy, because I'm not allergic to anything else. I don't even get seasonal allergies!

Have you tried more natural eyeshadows?

Look for the ones that say carmine free.

Thank you very much for the suggestions/links musthaveseenher and exotikittenx ! I'm going to try a couple of these and see how it goes.

I agree with you that organic makeup can solve this problem. Just be careful with the ingredients they put, especially if you are appling it for the first time.

Organic makeup tends to look bad on me. What organic makeup brand carries the same colors for WOC and color payoff as MAC? I'd be willing to try.

I feel you! I don't have an allergy to red dye but I am allergic to liquid/gel eyeliner, there must be something there but I can't wear ir or my eyelids will turn red and itch. It is so frustrating, I can't use eyeliners and I have to be careful with some mascaras. I hope you find purple eyeshadows that don't give you allergy!
