Hey lovely people! Needing some advice please - I’m considering purchasing a preloved datejust 36, 2014 with box and papers from a respected/trusted jeweller in the UK (attached pic). It’s in great condition and will join my DJ TT 31. The only issue is, it has an aftermarket dial and this is my concern. I believe Rolex won’t service/touch anything that has been hampered/changed. It is only the dial that has been changed so my question is, would you buy it, has anyone else on here got an aftermarket dial? Am I overthinking this?! I know I can get it serviced elsewhere….. not planning on selling it so wondering if I’m worrying about nothing!! Any advice gratefully received. Thanks!

Purchasing a luxury watch, especially preloved (with the market conditions for preloved watches easing up for the buyers for quite some time now) shouldn't be this anxiety-inducing. It should not cause stress.

Think of already having the watch. Will you still have the questions that you listed here? If you do, probably it's not worth to get. If you miss that one there will be another one like it or even better.

That's a lot of money for a problematic watch in terms of Rolex care. The point and value of having a Rolex at all is its integrity/originality and two, its serviceability by Rolex. I'd think there have to be beautiful, fully Rolex watches out there for equivalent money (or less) that resolve these issues.

Personally I wouldn’t buy a Rolex with aftermarket parts. Is there a reason why you’re drawn to this specific dial? If this dial is in some way significant to you and worth the potential risk of not being able to have it serviced by Rolex, then go for it, but I feel like you could find a similar style/color but fully authentic on the pre-loved market. But only you can determine if it’s worth it … good luck deciding!

I purchased a pre-owned Rolex many years ago with an aftermarket dial on it. After owning it a few years I sent it to Rolex for servicing because it started running slow. They responded that they could not service it because of the aftermarket face on it. They did tell me that they inspected the watch and it had all other original parts and they gave me the contact information for a local certified Rolex repair/service man. That service man was able to fix the watch but he warned me that he had to put aftermarket parts on it to fix it and that the repairs will last about 5-7 years (he was right they lasted almost 6 years). About 5 years ago I purchased a new Rolex and I won’t change anything on it after that experience. My experience wasn’t a disaster but it was a well earned lesson.

There are so many Rolexes out there, I’m sure there has to be a nice 36 with a blue face that isn’t an aftermarket dial? Having said that, if you truly love this particular one, of course follow your heart, but I don’t think I would. I’d happily buy fixer upper handbags for fun, but not something with mechanical parts.

You guys are SO helpful, thank you! I knew I could trust your honest feedback. Having read through your replies you’ve confirmed by doubts so I’ve decided against purchasing. What I also didn’t say was I’d be exchanging my JLC for this watch which on balance is simply not an equitable trade. Huge thanks again, I will be patient and keep looking. X
