I just got a beautiful 1.5 ct set of diamond studs in yellow gold. And, as probably everyone does, I spent all yesterday examining every nook and cranny of these earrings (even with my magnifying glass). I noticed where the studs are bent to hold the diamond, the gold is slightly melted. I would post a picture but you could never see this on a picture - it's small. Is this normal or sloppy work?

After reading my post, I can see why you need elaboration! What I meant to say was where each of the three prongs slightly bents to hold the diamond at the top of the setting, I can see the gold is slightly melted; meaning, a slight disfiguration of the prong where it touches the diamond. I hope that helps. I tried taking a picture and it can't be seen no matter how close I get.
