I am trying to get my kid into a competitive private school. What bag should I carry to to the tour? Birkin? Chanel GST? I don't want to look like I'm trying to hard....

If you want an honest opinion, I really don't think it matters which bag you carry. If it is a good school, it should not even matter. Sorry, not very helpful, good luck though!

Is the school competitive because their academics are good or because only the richest kids get in? I would also go for something professional but understated. If you have a Bayswater or a Fendi By the Way, something like that.

Agreed.
If you are there, they know you can afford costs for kid.
The bag will not matter.
What they want to see is if you are annoying to deal with, now & for future.

Public schools must deal with every annoying family. And grin through process.
But private schools can practice careful weeding.
Hopefully they let in a few rebels now & again. To ease tedium & spark poetry.:p

Good luck.:flowers:

It's so fun to read your replies, remainsilly, whatever the question is!!! You make me chuckle.

honestly? scrutinize the moms and decide from that. a Birkin could equally qualify and disqualify your child depending on school. this isn't frivolous - the people who make the decisions may not be going deep but you just want your child in the best school

I think GST (or Shoulder Birkin) might be a good choice, if you indeed carry it over the shoulder. Left shoulder, so it doesn't slide down when you shake someone's hand. A shoulder bag is always a little more relaxed than, say, a regular Birkin which is always a bit on show since you carry it in your hand or on the arm.
A competitive school may or may not scrutinize you and your family based on looks - somehow I feel like the best thing to do is go out with all guns blazing but not shooting from the hip. Prepare, take aim and conquer. And do all of this with the grace of a lady.

It's the Development Office - who will try to raise money from you once your child is there - not the Admissions Office, that will likely be more interested in what handbag you're carrying. For an initial meeting and group tour, as long as you are respectfully well-dressed, I doubt it will make a huge difference to Admissions. A well-behaved, engaging and articulate child is what will impress them! I remember Admissions was politely reserved until my son had his Shadow Day at his school - after which they were warmly enthusiastic. Good luck to you!

Wear what you feel comfortable in, whatever that may be. Would you really want your child at a school where their reps took such notice/offence to the type of handbag you enjoy carrying?

I agree! I see plenty of Hermes, LV & Goyard every day at my son's school - but I'm just as likely to be carrying my (very) broken-in old Coach tote as anything else, especially when I'm running errands...

Just dress well, be discreet, and comfy.

Ask good questions aka the questions that will help you understand more about the school and have them know what you’re looking for and if they can give you that. They don’t care if you can pay the tuition coz you’re already there. It’s your job to check if you can pay. It’s their job to find an awesome excellent kids who will put the school on another level or add another trophy to their cabinet. And it’s your job to find out if his school will be right for you and your kids. That’s the most important.
