Primers have been around for a number of years now, and I have a question for those of you who use them or have used them. I've tried several and never stuck with any of them because they seemed like an extra step that I really didn't need. Now I'm back to considering using one. I got a sample of one from Peter Thomas Roth and it says to apply to clean skin before foundation.

Question: What is best for combo skin - After moisturizing or on clean skin?

You need to apply primer on a well moisturized, smooth, exfoliated surface. So after moisturizer but before any makeup. But wait sufficiently between applications, and use a very light touch so that the subsequent products dosent bead up. Hydrating primers add moisture to their formulas, but whether this is sufficient for your needs depends on how dry your skin is; the weather and humidity; and other factors. If you have super oily areas that need more oil absorption than moisture, I recall that Wayne Goss was an advocate for a light dust of powder before foundation.

This is a nice explanation of how to layer product

Forgot to add silicone primers create a very smooth, almost airbrushed like surface, but supposedly enlarge pores, idk.
something to research further perhaps If you go down that road  Post covid, I no longer wear makeup, but when I did, combination skin required adjustment and some tweaking (lighter or no application in some areas) Have fun experimenting

I like Clarins Beauty Flash Balm and have done for many years - I'll apply it as the last stage not only before foundation/tinted moisturiser, but on moisturised bare skin as well.

What do you want the primer to do?

For me it's reduce the appearance of pores. The best one I've found for that blurring/pore reducing effect
is Perricone MD No Makeup Instant Blur primer.

I love ELF Putty Primer to make my makeup last longer and to reduce the appearance of pores. I've tried several others but didn't really love the finish.
You want to use a putty style primer on well moisturized skin after the moisturizer has been properly soaked in so the putty has something to cling to.

I use Kjaer Weis primer. I have tried many low and high cost primers over the years and this is by far the best. I use over moisturizer. Makes my skin look fresh and smooth. I have surprisingly received lots of ‘you have beautiful skin’ compliments since I’ve been using (and it’s cruelty free).
