What's a good buy? When buying preloved one accepts certain less than perfect
handbags either because of the great price or the rarity of the handbag.
When we buy a new bag, from a store or outlet or manufacturer online.... how
does this translate? How much of a discount do we need to get to compensate
for a less than perfect or factory fresh handbag?

Of course we want our 'new' bags to be perfect. But often they are not.
With list prices getting higher, what's the sweet spot for % off or actual $
to accept a handbag with some defect(s) that don't affect the function and are
purely cosmetic?

In the past I've tried to decide if I would buy the bag if I saw it in person in a store
in that condition at that price. If not, I should send it back. If yes, I should not focus
on the defect but rather the overall bag and the value I got.

But when you get a bag shipped to you there is also the emotional factor.
You unbox and see some defect. Oh no! Now what... do you overlook it
or return the bag. Can you ever unsee the defect?

Of the last 5 bags I have received from ILD, only 1 was perfect and pristine...
an Alto. The other 4 have issues. The Denison D/S was an easy decision...
stitching on the D/S slide was missing.... bag went back immediately.

But the other 3 less than perfect bags are harder decisions.
On another Alto the outside back pocket doesn't sit flat to the bag,
it ripples. That pocket is a perfect fit for my cell phone and I know
the pocket would stretch over time anyway with use. The sale was
just over 50% off for an Alto!

The 2 Florentine Large Domed Satchel are also somewhat disappointing.
The black one is already a little slouchy and not crisp looking.
There are no issues with the leather, it's just not structured and showing
waves. It was about 60% off and ended up costing about $150,
a really good price for a new large Flo bag.

The navy Flo Large Domed Satchel is almost perfect....except for a tiny
nic in the leather (on the front). You really have to examine the bag
to see it. But once I see it.... I know it's there. The leather on this
bag is more structured than the black one. Again, good price,
60% off, around $150.

I'm thinking that if any of these bags had been bought preloved,
at the prices I paid, they would be considered great finds. (Maybe
I'm wrong here.... tell me please). But since the bags are new
from ILD, I/we expect a higher level of quality. And the disappointment
of receiving a bag that has issues magnifies the issues and
discontent. After the Denison issue I put myself on ban island.
But I leapt off when I saw the Altos and Florentines at such good
prices. I'm going back to ban island. The question is do I take
these new handbags with me or ship them back to ILD.
I'll have to absorb the cost of the return shipping for these 3
(I'm still fighting over the Denison missing stitches). And,
for me the packaging and hauling the boxes to UPS is a big deal.

I see what you mean by the photos. These are the type of things that I notice when I unpack bags. One thing is that secondary market sellers are supposed to provide accurate pics and disclose any flaws in the listing. We hope for perfect or neat perfect bags from D&B and ILD.

I can only speak for myself and weigh my level of disappointment and the price. Off the subject, but an artificial Christmas tree arrived today, sold on Amazon as a "good as new" item and I decided to give a return a chance for the first time. It looked brand new and at -51% off, I was 90% happy, except it is a little more narrow than expected.

Bags on the other hand are tricky. The prices have really increased over the last few years, and even at sale prices they remain an investment.

Could you sleep on it? Pull them out in the morning and have a good look when you can hang them and step back for inspection and then do a close-up inspection to see if imperfections still bother you.

Again, this is me, but I have donated thousands of dollars in new fashion over the last year or two and vowed to return anything that did not meet my expectations. I am buying far less items that are final sale and paying return shipping costs on returnable items that do not work for me. This new approach works for ME, but you know yourself and somehow I think you will think this through. I admit, I am curious what you decide. Sensing good wishes for you to be happy with your decision.

Now, ILD is technically an outlet. My knowledge of the outlet is from a vintage collector. I have a white medium Essex bag, the inside D&B tag is cut, but you can still see the frayed threading. Inside the bag is stamped with IRREGULAR - meaning there was a defect with the bag, and it was sold at the outlet. If I'm shopping the outlet, I'm going to expect the items are in new condition, returns, with possible off color or striations in the leather. And I'm fine with that.

On another Alto the outside back pocket doesn't sit flat to the bag,
it ripples. That pocket is a perfect fit for my cell phone and I know
the pocket would stretch over time anyway with use.
You could try dampening the leather pocket with a warm washcloth, and use a hair dryer to help reform the leather.

But overall, if you're not happy with your purchases, you should go with your gut.

I just packed up the navy Florentine large domed satchel.
Sad to see it go back, but I know that my eye will find the damage
to the leather every time I look at the bag. And I'm concerned,
that over time, the area might expand as the top layer of the leather
wears. This is the main reason I'm sending it back.

I'm probably keeping the other 2 handbags. The issues aren't
functional, just cosmetic and I don't think anyone else would
notice them.

Glad to read you made your decision.

You can always reform the leather on the Alto.

How big is the inside of the black Flo dome?

I think your post makes for an interesting discussion.

I do think that this is one of those ‘eye of the beholder’ type of situations.

I could overlook a defect on a purse. However, others may not.

If the price tag of said bag, is quite high, I would be upset. In the Flo thread, was discussion about striations in the leather. Someone mentioned that an Hermes bag had striations. For the price of those bags, I would be very upset.

I will say this though, the prices of bags on the resale sites, are getting really high. We’re talking on par with the actual brand prices. You’re better off buying from either ILD eBay or the actual website.

Recently, I was watching an auction for the maple leaf tote bag on ShopGoodwill, and that bag sold for $450!

One of my 'justifications' for buying a handbag, especially a unique color leather or
a beautiful Dooney print, it that it's a limited opportunity. I didn't get the maple
leaf print, and now every time I see it in someone's video I wish I had added it to my
collection. It's a great print, but not worth $450 to me... new, NWT, or used!

Love this thread! When buying a new bag, the blue large satchel with the nick on the front, I would not have been happy either. If that nick were on the bottom I would overlook it. I understand that all leather is different and it’s really eye opening that there was such a difference in the 2 large domed satchels you received. Did you prefer the structure of the blue more than the black? Do you think the blue would soften eventually to look like the black? For $150 NWT,great price, I would have kept them both, that’s just me, because I like the look of them. I’d use the blue one with the nick more as my daily beater throw around.

The alto Rosina is a keeper. With the pocket being on the back, you might put your cell phone in it, it might flatten more when filled and laying against your body. It’s beautiful.

When im out hunting for pre-loved, I’m looking at the style first. Is this bag still made and can I get it new at the store? Will the size work for me? I’m looking at the condition, zooming in on scratches and defects to see if I can live with them. I’m looking at the nwt price VS the sellers price. I’m looking at the color and corners. Most of my collection is pre-loved, but the price and condition make them great finds In my book.

that maple leaf print is stunning. Everytime I see it I’m in awe of its beauty. I rarely see them for sale, but when I do the prices are outrageous. Just way too much.

I wouldn’t send it back just yet….

Yup. Sometimes they’re even more. Before they brought the Tilton back this summer, don’t mind me I am OBSESSED with the tilton, I saw prices as high as $579. The Tilton is on sale and the prices are STILL higher on resale sites. No packaging, how do I know you didn’t take this bag on a trip and decided to sell it when you got back.
Regardless I’m not paying that price, even for my unicorn Tilton.

That is insane the price on that! They’re even on sale from D&B for less than that right now! ‍

But I agree with what you said. My pumpkin flo domed satchel & teal zip Barlow, I got off Poshmark for $140!

Goodwillfinds listed a natural one yesterday (with an auth cert) for $199! I feel like that TikTok meme guy right now, like Goodwill “are you sure about that?!” LMAO

I prefer the look and structure of the navy blue large domed Flo satchel to the
more slouchy black one. But the little nick in the leather on the front concerns me...
not just from a cosmetic standpoint, but because the top layer of the leather is
torn away. While it's small, I'm worried that over time the exposed area
will get larger and more unsightly. If it was just a scratch, i would
have overlooked it, but it's much deeper than that.

I take really good care of my handbags and like them to look polished and
pristine. I just couldn't justify spending $150 on a bag that I had to carry
back side out or worry would look damaged. And since this is clearly somethng
I did not need, it should make me happy to own, not annoyed every time I
look at it.
