We have a list of designers for bags and purses. I am now curious what the list would look like if designers that specialise in clothing would be listed.

Which clothing designers do you think would be listed under the "premier" and "contemporary" tags in your opinion?

Interesting topic. Here are some of my thoughts.

One could list past and current Haute Couture fashion houses under premier category. However, this way of differentiating can be rather Eurocentric, elitist and non-inclusive.

I feel like in luxury and high fashion world price matter a lot. So I guess you could list brands according to price points of their clothing.

I personally would take design philosophy and quality into consideration ahead of price. While older and more traditional fashion houses such as Balenciaga, Chanel, Dior and Valentino come readily to mind, I also feel like there are a lot of established fashion houses that already proved themselves in the fashion world, so in this sense are deemed "worthy" of the premier status. My personal favourites are avant garde brands like Comme des Garçons and Maison Margiela. Both deserve the premier label in my opinion.

I agree with the price point, but I also think the brands history, image and influence should also be a decisive factor if the designer or brand is premier or not.

What other brands do you think should be under the premier category?

This is actually a great point.

I am also interested in whether designer/brand can reinvent themselves and produce something interesting and significant/groundbreaking for its time.

My personal list includes:
Armani
Balenciaga
Bouchra Jarrar
Chanel

Christian Lacroix (not active in high fashion anymore, but I love his costume designs for Ballet de l'Opéra national de Paris).

Comme des Garçons
Dior
Fendi
Giambattista Valli
Givenchy
Gucci
Guo Pei
Jean Paul Gaultier
Kenzo
Maison Margiela
Proenza Schouler
Schiaparelli
Simone Rocha
Viktor & Rolf
Valentino
Yves Saint Laurent
Yōji Yamamoto
Zuhair Murad

Etc..

Not a complete list by any means. I got tired of listing all the brands.

Great list

I would add:
Stella McCartney
Alexander Mcqueen
Neil Barrett
Jil Sander
Vivienne Westwood
Christopher Kane
JW Anderson
John Galiano
.....

I feel there are too many designers who specialise in clothes compared to bag specialists.

Also a great list :) also thanks for reminding me about the British designers. This was near sacrilegious of me to do so.

So true regarding designers specializing in clothings. There is no limit of what you can create and construct utilizing different material and fabrics. When it comes to handbag brands, the list is definitely shorter.
