What are your opinions on preloved jewelry? Any experiences or recommendations?

I like purchasing preloved items, especially for handbags, accessories or clothing. For some reason I have not yet brought any preloved jewellery item. Wanted to get your thoughts, experience, good retailers if any?

I think for unique pieces in particular I would, but any household brands, if I were ever to buy Cartier LoveVCA or Tiffany pieces, would you recommend it, I don’t know if I trust it just yet.

In general, though I have contemplated the purchase of preloved premier luxury brand jewelry, I have not done so yet. I would not do so for current popular pieces. Simply bc it’s too easy with CAD to replicate. I might consider a special discontinued VCA/Verdura/Cartier piece from Briony Raymond as she vets her pieces carefully and began her career at VCA. Or perhaps an established boutique or gallery like Fred Leighton, Eleutari, or Macklowe. In theory, I am not entirely opposed to preloved watches either, but in actuality, I have not purchased any of those either.

However, I am happy to buy one of a kind antique jewelry which is certainly preowned. Here is an antique aquamarine necklace. The aquamarines, all about the same size and cut, go all the way around my neck. They are hand set into the gold with a brooch/pendant that can be detached. I purchased this from my independent jeweler, and I trust him.

I love buying pre-loved jewelry just as much as pre-loved bags. You save a lot of money and get more for your money buying vintage/estate. I recently got my hand on a Cartier Diadea diamond necklace with about 4ct total pave diamond for $8K. The necklace is 20 years old, and even then, it probably cost more than $8K. I sent it to Cartier, they gave it a nice clean and polish, and it looks new again. I now have a unique necklace that is not common.

Tiffany is also an excellent brand to buy preloved or vintage. You can find older pieces for a great price.

Bvlgari, Piaget, and Chopard also have better pricing in the preloved market.

Another thing about preloved or vintage is that the jewelry is the gold/platinum weight is more substantial. Everything is hollow now a day compared to 10-15 years ago.

On The Real Real I scored a $3,300 pair of Marco Bicego white gold and diamond earrings for $660. And a substantial white gold and pave’ diamond bangle at an amazing price (it is my only unbranded jewelry but I couldn’t pass it up). Both of those were in seemingly brand new, unused condition. That said, I’ve also returned several jewelry purchases from TRR. My point is, if you are a smart and careful shopper there are some great jewelry deals to be had on the preowned/reseller market.

I’ve bought second hand a couple of times, but not branded jewellery. In fact none of my jewellery is branded, its all from independent jewellers. I bought some simple tourmaline stud earrings recently in yg, very pretty. It’s the design and the materials that interest.

I looooove antique jewelry. But you must be sure of its history. I definitely don’t want any negative energy. And there’re too many European jewels with torture and horrors from the 30-40s years of 20th century.

I've purchased estate pieces over the years from reputable dealers signed & unsigned.
Have a look at FD Gallery. The collection of jewelry presented there is "mesmerizing"
& the details & history of pieces available in her collection are quite informative, JMO
Thank you for this recommendation :)

I almost only buy preloved jewelry. I like the ”search” and also it is nice to buy something for a good price. i mainly buy in auctions or from reputable resellers and basically only ”branded” jewelry. My latest find was a 50 year old diamond ring that cost very little compared to the one sold now in an ”updated” version.

I totally agree with you! Preloved jewelry has such a timeless charm, and it’s great that it can be easily sterilized and appraised by a jeweler, making it a fantastic choice for something special. Plus, it's always fun to find a piece with a history!
