Why is it that our preferences suddenly change? Before I was happy with non- branded bags and then suddenly I was thrilled of owning a coach bag, and then I moved to michael kors and then Louis vuitton. Now, Im back to being contented with lacoste bag since I noticed I couldnt use my LVs anyway and the people I socialize with pay more attention to coach bag and lacoste..
Now, in jewelry, I noticed my preferences are changing too.. I was pretty contented with owning any gold pieces and then suddenly I got obssessed with branded stuff like tiffany and cartier. I even got those tiffany silver until I realize I cannot even use them at all. They stay in my box all the time. Then, I always tell my husband I would love to have any genuine diamond ring. I didnt have any idea of specs or the 4 C's. and then after returning the first diamond ring I got from mappins, I started to be particular with the clarity I like when I started looking for another ring to replace it with. I bought a second hand canadian diamond .50 carat solitaire ring from kijiji. Believe me, I did my homework on this. I had lots of research about what to consider for a diamond. My DH said I used to care only if its genuine diamond and now Im starting to be so picky. I even purchased a loup for this. I start to wonder how come Im like this all of sudden. I used to be a simple girl with simple wants. Now, im trying to control myself before my DH will get tired of all this obsession..I swear! my present obssession with pandora bracelet will be my last!

I used to be a simple girl as well, I had non-branded purses and jewelry, but now I am starting to change and buy branded accessories. I don't think you are being "picky", you are just trying to invest your money in something you love and really enjoy.

Now, I buy designer purses and jewelry for several reasons. First, the craftsmanship and the quality. When I get a LV bag, I know it's a designer bag with a history, with good materials and that I can always sell it if I need the money. Moreover, LV is increasing its price 3-4 times a year.... you do the math! The same goes with Chanel, Celine, Prada, etc.
Another reason is that LV, chanel, and almost all designer brands are supposed to be non-conflict and environmental friendly. If I buy a nice diamond from Tiffany, I know it's conflict-free.

In jewelry it gets more complicated. I have to be "picky" because I am very allergic, sometimes even the 10kt or 14kt gold can have an allergic reaction on my skin. Some friends that don't know I am allergic tell me to buy fashion jewelry, because it's trendy and cheap, but I can't. I prefer to have at least one good Gold piece that can use than thousands of fashion jewelry. Some people buy tons of non-branded jewelry and bags, but if they do the math, they could have bought a nice designer item instead.

I guess the more you do research and learn about all this, the more you will want to invest in designer stuff. I know that my pieces are timeless, I hope I can give my daughter my collection in the future :)

Being on tPF changed my tastes when I first started looking and posting. I went from being content with costume jewelry and sterling and CZ to preferring luxe branded gold and silver like Tiffany, VCA, and Hermes. I went from being content with Roxy purses to liking LV.

In the last year, I've become enchanted with jade and given the opportunity to put money toward designer jewelry or purses or jade, I pick jade every time. The nice thing about the switch though, is that there are gorgeous pieces of jade at every price point.

Yeah tpf contributed a lot in my obssession with branded stuff. Years ago it didnt matter to me. Im trying now to be more simple but it could be so hard. I have succeeded though when it comes to bags. Still, I cant help checking LV once in a while but never tempted to buy again. I knew something is wrong with me when during my brief confinement in the hospital I kept on noticing the nurses diamond rings..lol it helped me kept my mind off my fear in my pending surgery though lol

Sounds like you have discovered a new ( and expensive) hobby.

I was never a simple girl

I think your interests will develop and change constantly throughout your life. Sometimes these interests will be expensive and other times you'll go back to a simpler way of life. There's nothing wrong with realizing quality and wanting to spend your money on quality items :smile1:

To think I used to think and tell my husband that I will never spend a dime on a mere silver in pandora and now I have one bracelet, 2clips and 2 charms. Its crazy! I had surgery yesterday and when the doctor advised me to walk so I could expel the gas they put in I told my DH to accompany me to the mall and maybe find another charm from pandora that will represent my first surgical experience! Crazy right? Lol

I tend to say I was never a simple girl, too :D I have been into jewelry very early, guess I have inherited this jewelry gene from my grandmothers and mother.

I started early with brand jewelry, however from cheaper brands, i.e. Fossil or Esprit, they also make jewelry, not sure if these brands are known outside Europe.
I remember saving for an Esprit trinity ring (all silver) from the money I earned as an apprentice. Walking every day during lunch time to that shop and admiring it through the window until I could finally buy it.
Then I was into Thomas Sabo charms and jewelry for quite some time, later on I started collecting Trollbeads - I collect TB until today, it has slowed down though. I often wish I would not have spent so much on beads, for that money I would have gotten some brand pieces from Cartier etc.

Also handbags and purses have always been a weak spot. However, now I tend to buy less but better quality.
Before I started reading here I liked opulent and playful pieces and wore mostly silver pieces.
My preferences have changed here, I love pink gold and rarely wear silver anymore. Also the
opulent pieces are mostly gone, I like it clean and classic now and also dainty pieces. Trollbeads are the only exception.

I believe in selling what I do not use anymore and fund new stuff with sold pieces. I don´t want to hoard stuff and I hate seeing something forgotten in a drawer.

I was never simple either, but I've recently gotten into Cartier and T&Co, much to the dismay of my SO. He's coming around to T&Co as he's read up on how they source responsibly, but doesn't want me to go off the deep end.

I try to only buy what I love though, regardless of name. I'll admire things, but don't feel compelled to buy and own them. It's a lot easier to ask, "do I really want this?" than to just say to myself, "no, I can't have it" and have it be successful. The latter generates a false sense of desire. If I can't decisively know I do want something, I know I'd rather put my money towards something I do.

same here, I don't accumulate. If I don't wear something for a year I always think "someone else will appreciate this more than I do!" so I sell it. If a buyer says i'm only interested in using it for scrap I always say no thanks and find someone who loves the pieces for what it is :smile1:

Me too. I don't want to accumulate stuff that'll just sit in my drawer. Still... they add up somehow. I like and wear pearls, diamonds, gold, rose gold, white gold, and silver, and I'd like to have some basic, carefully chosen pieces in all of them (that'll be a looooog time in coming). I used to wear more white gold, silver, and semi-precious pieces; like I used to wear a lot of amethyst, green topaz, peridot, etc. But now my preferences have run toward pearls, rose gold, gold, and diamonds (alas a lot more expensive!). On a day to day basis, it seems easiest to wear pearls or rose gold pieces. I'd definitely rather have fewer fine jewelry pieces that I wear a lot.

Yeah i have some pieces that just stayed on my jewelry box. I cant get rid of it for sentimental reasons.
