Potential Birkin Buyer... Inquiry

I am a very active participant in the LV forum so I am not very familiar with buying a Birkin. However, I am very interested in placing an order in the future. I want a 40 CM Fjord (sp) Birkin in Black. How would I go about ordering it and how much would it be? I know that there is a waitlist or a wait once you order the bag. Do you pay for the bag right away or do you put a certain amount down? How does it work?
