After decades of conservative leadership, Francis tried to reset the course of the Roman Catholic Church, emphasizing inclusion and care for the marginalized over doctrinal purity.
I was in New York City in 2015 when he visited. I was visiting with a friend and one morning we woke up around 7 or so and there he was on the television, already out and about. It seemed that throughout the day we just missed him by 10/15 minutes. One gentleman showed me a video of the pope in his little fiat waving to everyone 😃. That evening we were exhausted and handing out in our hotel room, and there was the pope at an event in Central Park. I think it was like 9/10:00 p.m. We joked at the time what energy he had! He was an extraordinary man.
A beacon of light has been taken away from us. I know he was advanced in age and mortal, but still when the news broke out, I cannot even explain my sense of loss. We live in very dark times, and without him, I feel the world is even more bleak.
