I have decided to sell my Alhambra 10 motif YG. I purchased the necklace in 2018 and wore it a handful if times. The necklace went into my safe when Covid started and it’s been in there until recently. Although the necklace is beautiful, I just don’t wear it. I find I’m more of a pendant person as it is more comfortable for me. When I purchased the necklace VCA extended it to 20”. The motifs are evenly spaced. I’ve worn the necklace at 20”, I‘ve clasped the back to have 1 motif or 2 motif hanging in order for different lengths. All lengths look great. My question??? Should I have VCA remove the extra links and have necklace put back to the original length before selling it? If I sell it at 20” would the buyer be able to have VCA adjust it? I have receipt, certificate, boxes (NY 5th Ave special black box) and travel pouch. I’ve never sold anything before, however, I know I need to start with the length of the necklace first. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Where are you thinking of selling it? Some places it will not make a difference, like Fashionphile or some other places that offer a buyout option. In that case I would save the sizing fee. If you plan to sell it directly, like on eBay or similar, it may be best to return it to the standard length first. I would personally buy a necklace that was lengthened, but you may have a larger pool of potential buyers if you have it as close to the store specs as possible.

Hi, not sure where to sell it, haven’t sold anything before. I know I will not sell on Ebay. Heard too many horror stories and that’s a big no for me. First I need to figure out what to do about the length. Do you have experience selling jewelry? Any suggestions where to start? Thanks

Hi! I would remove the links and get the necklace back to the original length. Why?

When selling a used piece, you want to get interest from as wide an audience as you can get. Odds are low someone is going to want this necklace in a 20" length.

I also think if you have a buyer who wants the standard length, they will be extremely hesitant, if at all, to buy your necklace as-is because they will have to pay to get it shortened. Worse though, the buyer will be afraid VCA will reject their request to shorten because the buyer is not the original owner.

From what I have seen from folks wearing a 10, the person who extends typically just buys an extender but does not want the necklace permanently extended.

Finally, buyers of used pieces scrutinze everything for fear it's a fake. This is especially for common/popular pieces such as YG hammered gold as these are often faked. I think keeping your necklace extended may cause some potential buyers to completely pass as they do not want to "take the risk."

For me, I would 100% put it back to the original length. When buying used, everyone seems to want "like new" pieces, not altered pieces. Just my thoughts here to help you decide. Good luck.

Thank you for your advice. I agree with every point you’ve made. I will contact my SA tomorrow to find out if I need to bring it in or ship to her. PS …. You always have the best advice!

Hi again!
Idea... this is a long shot, but try Briony Raymond in NYC.
She sells estate pieces which implies she also buys estate pieces. This piece is not exactly estate, but everyone uses that word so loosely. She sells VCA, so she definitely has a client base for this brand.

Plus.. the best part... your 5th Ave Black box would more valued by a NYC/Tri-State buyer than from a buyer who is not familiar with it. To buyers who have not heard of this box, some may prefer the classic celdaon/sage green box.

Hence, give it a shot at Briony Raymond to see if she is interested in buying your piece.
Emphasize it is "Like New. Comes with rare, impossible to find, no longer available 5th Ave black box!"

Ok, thank you. Will contact her as soon as the necklace is back to original length. Regarding the ”black box”, pretty sure I have the classic green inside of it. I will take a look, I know it’s not the travel patch. I also have the ribbon..haha
