So I brought home my Baume et Mercier watch yesterday (thanks to all those who helped me decide!) and find myself confused about water resistance.
If my watch says water-resistant to 30m, does that mean it can get raindrops on it/water from hand-washing, etc. and not suffer damage...or does it mean I can actually swim with it and shower with it? What do you do with your watch? I am very curious and don't want to damage the watch...

water resistant means just tat- it is safe for handwashing little splashes etc i would not shower or swim with it.
for swimming a waterproof 100m is neccesary.
actually the whole waterproof resistant thing is confusingas it actually has less to do with meters but with pressure

This should help:

Water resistance chart
  • Water-resistant to 30 meters, Will withstand splashes of water or rain but should not be worn while swimming or diving.
  • Water-tested to 50 meters, Suitable for showering or swimming in shallow water.
  • Water-tested to 100 meters, Suitable for swimming and light snorkeling.
  • Water-tested to 150 meters, Suitable for snorkeling.
  • Water-tested to 200 meters, Suitable for skin diving.
  • Diver's 150 meters, Suitable for scuba diving.
  • Diver's 200 meters, Suitable for scuba diving.

A friend of mine went swimming with his watch stem out and ruined his watch. Otherwise, he swam with it on just fine for years (it's a Tag). Be careful! That's just the kind of thing I would accidently do...

This is perfect! Thank you so much:yes:!
I am appalled that the SAs at Birk's who really should know better told me that I could "swim to 30m depth, no problem' with my new watch...

I wouldn't shower or swim in a Buame and Mercier, or fine watch...unless it was made for it. Oh, by the way, the water resistance thing can change over time. Periodically, the gaskets in the watch need to be checked. Every other battery change. Every 2-3 years. There are lsts of watch forums which provide reference material on care, water resistance, etc, if you need additional info. Oh, don't change the time on your watch between 8 pm and midnight. Bad for movement. Congrats on the Baume and Mercier!

*whew* I'm so careful about that. I always check to see that the stem is as tight as possible lol. I shower with my watch on a daily basis (J12--200 m water resistant) with no problems whatsoever. My SA did warn me vehemently to always make sure the stem is tight before getting my watch near any water.

Extra word of caution. Even watches that are water safe are not steam safe!!!! So be careful of steam from hot shower. This is what I have been told by jewellers, but have never tested it myself!!!!
