I am having a necklace made for me(think tiffany diamonds by the yard) with 5 diamonds on a chain. I can not decide platinum or white gold? I spoke to my jeweler and she thinks that white gold is better? What do you jewelry experts think? Price isn't an issue I just want whatever will look nicer and shinier on.

Platinum! I guess when I think about it, WG is shinier than platinum. But my platinum is shiny enough for my taste and does not get that yellowing look that WG seems to get over time. It could have just been the piece that I had. But I am not a jewelry expert. I am just going off my personal experience.

When I said shiner I meant the diamonds because I have heard since platinum is duller it makes the diamonds stand out more. So in that case which do you prefer?

If you are going to wear it daily, I'd suggest platinum. Usually white gold is so bright because it is plated with rhodium; it will need to be replated at some point.

I have both, I think maybe white gold looks a little shinier, maybe more silver-like in some ways. Platinum has a slightly greyer look, both are very pretty. Maybe platinum looks a little more vintage to me? I've never had any white gold need replating, neither has my mom who wore a mix of white gold and platinum rings for years, and still does.

I've heard platinum is harder then white gold and 18kt is softer then 14kt. I had a tennis bracelet/necklace made in 14kt because the jeweler told me it was stronger for everyday wear. I agree with Swanky...I've worn a WG 12ct tennis bracelet everyday for years, with no yellowing. Not crazy about the look of platinum but I'm sure it's beautiful on certain pieces.
