Phil the Groundhog has spoken today!

  1. Punxsutawney Phil sees shadow, predicts more winter ahead

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. -- If you believe in folklore, bundle up for six more weeks of wintry weather.

This is Groundhog Day, and the furry little critter known as Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning. That, according to tradition, means six more weeks of winter.

The apathetic-looking rodent was pulled from his stump by members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle. They are the local businessmen in the Western Pennsylvania town who carry out the February 2nd ritual while garbed in top hats and tuxedos.

The ceremony was preceded by a boisterous celebration attended by thousands of cold, but happy people, including a few couples who used the occasion to get engaged.

The town of Punxsutawney leads the modern observance of what is essentially a German superstition. The belief is that if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on February 2nd, the Christian holiday of Candlemas, winter would last another six weeks. If no shadow were seen, legend said spring would come early.

  2. Only 6 weeks? I wish! :p We'll have snow in April here in Michigan.
  3. LMAO @ "apathetic looking." Aw.
  4. I've always wondered....does Phil say "yah- it's there---" I mean- how do they know he see's his shadow? lol~ sorry for my ignorance if there is an obvious answer
5.'s 78 degrees at the moment, and I'm still waiting for winter !!
I guess its not Phil's fault, it's called "global warming" !!!
  6. Arghh.. well, that certainly sounds about right for all the residents of Southwestern Ontario today. :nogood::nogood:
  7. I don't want anymore winter!! my sprinttime wardrobe is so much cuter than my winter wardrobe!!

Is it just me getting older, or has groundhog day been getting less and less attention from before?
  8. I'm sick of the cold.....come on spring!
  9. Awww...well I think more often than not that the groundhog DOES see his shadow meaning yep, more winter on the way.

Look at this from! This is of course according to Punxsutawney Phil, who is THE groundhog per afficianados out there...

  10. ^ LOL!

All my friends who went to Penn State used to go to Groundhog's Day every year and they said you pretty much stand outside in the cold allllll day and drink. Then when they bring "Phil" out all the drunk college kids go "Yaaaarghhhyyyyy!!!!!" and practically scare the poor thing to death. Only in PA lol!:okay:

ps- Sadly, I live in PA now. So I'm allowed to make fun of it.
  11. More winter? *sigh*
  12. My immediate thought when I saw the post topic was of Bill Murray in Groundhog Day he looked most "apathetic" after going through the same things day after day.

  13. I love that movie.
  14. I wonder what's going to happen when "Phil" expires
  15. More winter means more time to get into shape!
