Hi,
after some discussion with my boyfriend
He warmed up to the idea of getting an antique diamond!

We narrowed down to the following:
a light yellow pear, OEC, OMC, and AVC.

I like pear because it looks big for its carat weight and flatters my finger
shape. I am thinking about going down in color(W~Z) to go bigger, around 3 carats.
One thing that holds me back is that it doesn't seem to give off that much colored light.
It also seems to glitter, rather than sparkle.

For old cuts and avc, I like the bold flashes of color and the facet pattern.
I can only afford smaller (1.5~2carat range in AVC) diamond in this cut.
Since it faces up pretty small for its carat weight, I am guessing a 1.5ct will look like a 1 carat diamond.
I've seen good old cuts before when I was on an overseas trip a while ago
but am having some difficulty seeing some good old cuts in person right now.

Which one do you prefer more for an engagement ring?

I'd take a well cut smaller (and I use this term lightly  ) over a pear that doesn't sparkle any day.

Is that ring from JBEG you posted ( the 3+ ct antique) within the realm of possibility? You really liked it.

Unfortunately, no, it's above our budget.

After reading everybody's post, I think I like the idea of getting a stone that sparkles with bolder flashes of light.

I wonder if paying more to get an AVC rather than an OMC / OEC is worth it, though.

If you go with an AVC/AVR from GOG, they have a tradeup policy. So buy the best you can get now and then at a milestone like 10 years you can trade in this stone for a larger one.
