MARSEILLE, France (Reuters) - A self-professed art lover stood trial on Tuesday accused of kissing a $2-million (986,000 pound) painting while wearing red lipstick and damaging the canvas.

The deputy prosecutor in the southern French city of Avignon accused the defendant, Sam Rindy, of "savagery" for having left a lipstick smear on the work by U.S. artist Cy Twombly, and demanded the court fine her 4,500 euros (3,117 pounds).

The picture's owner, Yvon Lambert, wants $2 million in damages and a further 33,400 euros that he says is needed to pay for the restoration work.

Rindy, an artist of Cambodian origin, has said she was "overcome with passion" when she saw the painting hanging on a gallery wall in July 2007.

"This woman is profoundly upset. She was overcome by an emotion that she could not tame," her lawyers, Patrick Gontard Jean-Michel Ambrosino, told the court, describing the kiss as an "act of love".

Lambert's lawyer rejected this line of defence, saying: "In love, there need to be two consenting people."

Rindy, who is in her 30s, told reporters earlier this year that she thought her lipstick had improved the white, untitled painting.

The court will deliver its verdict on November 16.

  2. He messed up a piece of art...he deserves to be in court and pay his dues.
  3. What's wrong with showing your appreciation by applauding or something?

By 'showing her appreciation' she ruined the artist's work!
  4. I meant she not he..lol!
  5. It is people like this that are ruining things for the rest of us. By the time I get to France to go to the museums, I will have to view all of the paintings through 2 inches of plexiglass thanks to morons like this!
  6. I think it's a little bit cute, but then on the other hand very creepy and dumb. like Glamfoxx wrote above it's people like these ruining for the rest of us that are perfectly able to control our emotion towards paintings (allthough maybe not for purses...). I hope she's fined. She did trash the whole thing.
  7. I can't believe she called it "love"!
  8. Ugh... the title lead me to believe something else, just that somebody was making out too long in front of a painting, NOT making out WITH the painting. She deserves to be fined at the least.
  9. Just another act of vandalism, IMO.
If she really respected the painting, she would have left it ALONE.
  10. I love Monet's Waterlilies. I'm going to do what normal people do when they love a painting . . . I'll buy a poster / postcard / refrigerator magnet / mouse pad / t-shirt . . . you see where I'm going with this?

Nowhere in my list does it say I'm going to kiss the painting.

And like someone said earlier . . . it's idiots like her that ruin it for the rest of us!

(Haha, Megs . . . "making out with the painting!")
  11. "In love, there need to be two consenting people." i laughed!
  12. :roflmfao::roflmfao:
  13. is she for real? she is called an "art lover" but has no respect for other people's work and even says that her lipstick smears "improved" the white painting...
