I know you get the VAT back when buying in Paris, but overall with the VAT and the bad dollar/euro exchange rate does it end up being cheaper to buy a Cartier watch in Paris?

Just curious...

Thanks!

Meghan

Not sure. The Euro is down a lot. It was at 1.30 last time I checked, which is way off from its high earlier in the summer of like 1.65

Cartier just raised their prices in the US. Depending on which watch you want, you may be able to wrangle a deal with a local jeweler who could use the sale...

Thanks!

I may be going to Paris in December and thought it might be nice to bring back a souvenir, and maybe get a better deal at the same time. I am looking at the two tone Santos and my sister is looking at the gold Tank Francaise.

I did not know you could haggle down the price of jewelry! That is a good tidbit to know in the future!:smile1:

Retailers do have some wiggle room, it just depends upon where you go and what sort of offer you make. Its not crazy steals, but you can typically get at least something off. I'm not sure you can do that directly at Cartier though. Dig around on this forum. There are loads of posts by people who have bargained for Cartier watches. Although, buying it in Paris, does sound more chic than bargaining at home. Still, bargaining in this economy has its merits. Either way, good luck!

I brought my Cartier Roadster at HOUR GLASS watch boutique, and got almost 35% off!! I don't think you can get any discount buying directly from Cartier boutique.

Wow that is quite a deal! I looked but I think Hour Glass is only in Asia unless I am mistaken. Its helpful to know that I may be able to talk the price down a little bit...

Thanks!!!

^^I think so too, in Asian and Oceania. Watches of Switzerland give pretty good deals too:yes:. I chose Hour Glass cos i didn't like the SA at the Switzerland, had a ****ty attitude:cursing:

Cartier tends to standardize theirs prizes worldwide. Last year, when I bought my small love and small jug (just before the increase) it was somehow cheaper in the US than in Paris due to exchange rate ... I live in Paris so I was very very surprised ...

Can someone help me figure out pricing in Paris vs Texas. Is there any savings if I were to buy it in Paris? When I do the math, it costs the same but I’m not sure how much VAT would be and then how much tax I would need to pay during customs. Please advise!

And possible sales/use tax depending on the rules where you live.

Its a wash -- depending on how much you spend and what you are willing to fudge or admit to on your customs form when reentering the US. You may save ca. 10-12% if you are lucky. I will say that the tax refund was way faster than any other store I've ever encountered and they did not do a visual inspection of my goods at the airport, which is always an interesting challenge depending on the time of day.
