For those who plan to be in Paris OR who use the Internet to watch Auctions or even 'Bid Live' by Internet there is the bi-annual HERMES VINTAGE Auction taking place on May 21st in Paris.

There are a large number of Kelly's, Birkin's and other bags but ... if you are thinking of bidding beware .... the 'price estimates given by the Auction House seem to be very conservative :

Example:

A Brown box calfskin leather "Kelly" bag 32 cm, gitl metal hardware, keyfob & paddlock, handle. Pretty good general condition (used, scratches marks). Estimation 600 - 800 € ($800 - $1000)

If interested the catalogue can be viewed at:-

Also be aware that you need a thorough set of photos and description before bidding. Artcurial often says things like "slightly used corners" when what they really mean is "huge holes in corners." Sometimes the flaws don't show in the zoomable photo presented on the item page, so definitely do your homework when buying from them! Also check in advance about shipping services; I recall some problems noted with packaging and shipping on previous Artcurial threads.

What Xiangxiang says about buyers' premiums is also crucial-- to bid you have to agree to premiums up to 24%, which is substantial (I say "up to" because the premiums vary by item type)-- and then there's VAT too if you're in the EU.

You will see things go for crazy prices sometimes, in either direction. I still can't figure out why some items turn out to be good deals, and other very battered bags with no special provenance go through the roof. Fun to watch, though.

the estimates in their catalogue tend to be very conservative. the final prices usually go for about 30-50% higher, and on top of that there is their seller's premium which is about another 24%. so it does add up. but there are some good finds there, interesting curious pieces.

True! I'd be keen if they had smaller bags. :graucho:

last auction they had some amazing exotics.
There's a Hermes outfitted car in this auction. Very cool.

The results show that a lot of bags went up to 4 times more than the estimated result. Crazy, and to start with those estimates were high.
Also remember, there will be up to 30% extra on the price by the time you've got the bag in your hot little hands - they will have added their various taxes, then there's shipping, customs, duty etc !!!
It's quite a dear way of buying now.

You're right ! And at the same time some results show a true bargain on top condition bags.
