The strap is specchio leather. I had to take a full size down so the strap is tight on my toes. I'm hoping it will stretch with time. The middle strap that goes between the big toe seems okay. It's turned vertically so that it fits. Not sure how the "rubbing" is since I haven't worn them out yet. =) I will definitely report back after some wear!
