JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- A dormitory matron at Oprah Winfrey's school for disadvantaged girls in South Africa has been suspended amid allegations of serious misconduct.
No details were disclosed about the alleged offence at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls at Henley on Klip, just south of Johannesburg.
Police confirmed they had been informed of the allegation, but weren't investigating at this stage.
Chief Executive Officer John Samuel said an internal inquiry had been initiated "based on one serious claim of misconduct involving a dormitory parent."
The accused was no longer on campus, Samuel said in a statement Friday, and immediate action had been taken "to ensure the safety and well-being of the academy's learners."
"Nothing is more serious or devastating to me than an allegation of misconduct by an adult against any girl at the academy," Winfrey said in a statement.
South Africa's Child Protection Services have been notified, and U.S. and South African private detectives have been engaged to investigate, Samuel said.
To ensure an impartial investigation, the head of the academy has agreed to take a paid leave of absence, Samuel said, making clear the woman wasn't the subject of any allegations.
The school was opened in January amid much fanfare.

A couple of staff at the academy for girls had let physical and other types of abuse go on. This included sexual abuse and abuse such as throwing a student against the wall and meaning to choke her.

Apparently, Oprah has expressed extreme remorse upon arriving @ the academy when the news was brought to her, and felt she "let down" the parents of the student.

When I first heard about Oprah opening this grand school, I was thrilled for her and all the privileged girls who will now have good opportunities. I wish Oprah and her students well
  2. That's terrible. Oprah has done so good and this was great what she did for these girls. I wish people wouldn't have to ruin it. I really hope things get sorted out there.
  3. It is terrible.
Oprah was sexualy abused as a little girl and this must just be eating her up.

I have no doubt that she will make sure everyone involved is punished to the fullest extent of the law.
  4. I hope the school is more diligent of whom they are hiring. Maybe just have ALL women employees?

  5. I agree! I'm sure she will make sure that they are properly punished.

    Plushkitty, your avatar is ADORABLE!!!
  6. Wasn't there negative press about this school awhile back? Seems like something was already going on....those poor underpriviledged girls....
  7. nice suggestion, but apparently the head principal(female) and the 'dorm mother' were part of the accused along with one other unidentified employee. it was actually the dorm mother who did the sexually + physical abusing. crazy huh? I believe Oprah to be passionate about her school and am sure she meant to hire the best possible staff...unfortunately it doesnt always go as according to plan

    and ty nathansgirl!
