Hi. I don't really know how to buy diamonds or fine jewelry so i don't know if i got a good deal or not and just wanted opinions.
Yesterday I went shopping for a mothers day gift at Macy's and was debating on what i should get for her and just happened to look at the fine jewelry cus they were having a sale. The SA there ended up showing me a necklace that looks like this (a little different)

http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=214400&CategoryID=21247

The design is almost identical except that the necklace is 18k white gold, 1ctw of diamonds (colorless, i think SA said it was SI clarity), and has a baguette diamond on top of the 3 round diamonds. The original cost is supposedly $5,190.00 but is that the normal price for that kind of jewelry? Also, i got a spectacular deal on it because i only paid about $900 for it after discounts but now a few people are saying if its possible that macy's would sell it for $900 thats ov $4k off retail and so i'm beginning to worry. lol. Can i trust Macy's or should i take it to a jewelers and ask if its actually everything it claims to be?

Thanks so much for your help and time reading this. ^_^

I have bought a lot of jewelry from Macy's. Did you buy it in the clearance section? That alone is 60% off. Then usually they add an additional 20% plus the 10-15% if you use a card. It is possible to get a great deal like that at Macy's. See what others say though.

i wouldn't normally purchase a diamond necklace there, but it does seen a good value, if the diamonds have some fire and not too much color

if you feel uncomfortable, i would take it to a reputable jeweler...just for peace of mind

I think $900 is pretty reasonable for SI diamonds. I'm from the UK & a i'd expect to pay £1000+ for a pendant like that from a big chain store. The prices are always higher in places like that. I found this pendant on a UK chain store site & it's £995 thats about $1965 and it's only half a carat (SI2-3)! So i don't think it's too bad. If you shop around you'd always get a better deal but if you don't know anything about jewellery or what you're buying you did the best thing going to a large well known store!

I think its very pretty =)
I just bought a Roberto Coin cross necklace 1.5 ct. 18k white gold
I paid $3500 for mine so I would say you did well  Compaired to me atleast, haha

I think you got a good deal. I frequent the wholesale jewelry mart in SF and have learned a lot about the mark-ups ...you would be shocked! But that said if the necklace looks good...most important thing... you made a fine purchase.

There are many other factors besides color and clarity that determine the value of a diamond, I have seen some I (imperfect) stones that were beautiful because of the excellent cut and and color. Truth is , if you are buying for you and not investment purpose (not wise for the inexperienced) go with what you see.

thanks so much for all the replies. i feel a bit more reassured now. this has inspired me to study more about jewelry so in the future when i buy for myself i will be a better purchaser. keke. ^_^
