:graucho: (For one of my birthday gifts today!) Of course, being who I am, I'll most likely get him a good discount somehow. (I even did that with my engagement ring--got that sucker at 1/4 of the original price! :D) I'm weird like that--I hate to see him spend too much on his credit card.

We went to 2 places, but I didn't see anything that sung to me. We're going out to dinner later, so I'll check some other places. If I don't find anything there, I'll fall back on my old standard: eBay!

Wish me luck!

Well, after much searching (on foot, most of today), we bought something: a yellow gold rope chain, with a gorgeous large, oval garnet, surrounded by very nice quality diamonds, and coordinating, checkerboard-cut rounded square yellow gold earrings. The necklace really is stunning, and very good quality. I went in to look at rubies, but we both thought that the garnet was nicer quality. (Anyone else notice that stores have few rubies, and then they are lab-created?)

Today has been so exciting! I've never had someone tell me to pick anything I wanted (he didn't say, "Within reason", but I'm not greedy!). DH has amazing taste in jewelry, and he kept wanting to buy me diamonds. I'm much more of a colored-stone gal, though. When he said, "You know, the stuff you buy from eBay, etc. looks very nice, but you really need some really good stuff. I'd like to discuss with you the idea of maybe doing this every birthday, and spending some more. You really should have some higher-end jewelry." After the smelling salts were waved under my nose after I slid to the floor of the car in a dead faint, (thank God I actually wasn't driving when he said this, or most likely I wouldn't be here to tell the tale), I said, "Well, dear, if you think that's a good idea, I'd like to." He's so sweet; he kept saying while we were driving home, "That necklace was just crying out for matching earrings." Am I dreaming this, or becoming delusional?!?! Has someone slipped drugs into my Diet Pepsi today, and I'm tripping out and halucinating all of this??!?? :roflmfao:

I had so much fun today! I hate birthdays, except for the jewelry I get, so I was anticiapting a boring, kind of depressing day--especially since I lost my Mom last month--and her birthday is in a couple of weeks--so this was just an amazing day. After all, he did buy me (I chose, then used his PayPal for it) some small jewelry items on eBay, and there was some of the dollar limit not spent--but it was nowhere close to what he spent today, so this was totally unexpected and so romantic.

Oh, and by the way, I DID make sure he got a lot of discounts! The 40% sale actually begins tomorrow, but they let us use it today; we pick up the jewelry tomorrow. We actually got the stuff for about 75% off, with all of the discounts! The worst part: since the discounts were so great, I'm thinking about going back with DH, and buying something (rubies!!!!) for myself!

There you are, ladies and gentlemen: my first Elizabeth Taylor moment! :D And I think DH is far more handsome than Richard Burton!

It sounds gorgeous! Please post pics!
And I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. :hugs:

Thank you for both the compliment and your condolences. BTW, I started the charm bracelet in honor of Mom yesterday. It now has only 4 charms (for a total of 19-20), but it will be a nice reminder of her (I posted a thread about this a few weeks ago, if you're interested in reading about it).

We picked up DH's gift this morning, and guess what I did? Yep, I bought MYSELF a gift: the first ruby, diamond, 14k necklace I tried on, plus matching earrings. They had a great sale, and, since I hadn't used my store credit card for years, they had to re-sign me up--and, for that, I got ANOTHER 15% off my 40+20+15 discount sale price!!!! :graucho: And, we also won a gift basket that contained a freshwater pearl necklace (and some other small things)! Then, for every $75 we spent, the mall was giving away school supplies--spiral-bound notepads, folders and pencils--we were given a TON of supplies (and we don't have kids, but we can use them) --bet DH never thought he'd get those for buying me jewelry, LOL! To make it even nicer, the saleswoman was the lady who had sold us my engagement ring 7 years ago, and she remembered me and vice versa. She also gets a tiny commission on the sales, so we were glad we could deal with her again. We all had so much fun!

Please post pics!!! Can't wait to see! Love garnets and rubies! What does your ruby necklace look like? Natural rubies are so hard to find! They are associated with so much crime that it is almost impossible to clear customs with them. So in the US a lot of stores are resulting to lab created. We have a store here that buys rubies direct and then has their vendor make pieces out of them. They are all natural and an almost perfect blue red color, but can cost as much as diamonds. They also have the greatest selection but still only carry a few things. I was looking at rubies Friday and they only had 2 bracelets, 2 pairs of earrings, and a few rings/pendants. They do carry more loose stones though. They had about 10 loose rubies. Maybe two were over a carat. Happy Birthday! Sounds like you had such a fun two days!!

Ok, the necklace DH bought me is not in the online catalog, so I can't post a pic (we've got to get that photo program running on our pc; it's driving me mad!). However, the ruby necklace I bought myself is in the 2nd row, far right. (If you click on it, though, it says the pic is unavailable, so you have to see all of the others around it to see it):

The garnet earrings DH bought to match the shy garnet necklace (who removed itself from the online catalog, I suppose!):

Keep in mind that the actual items are far nicer looking in real life than online. The garnets are also a more rich, darker red then the fire red they show--the pix don't do any of the jewelry justice.

I wish I could show you the garnet one DH gave me! It's stunning--the little diamonds around the large oval garnet just dance when shown in the correct light--and the yellow gold rope chain sparkles, too. So pretty!
