Unfortunately not, you can't take the strap off.
I saw one in oak, when I was in Newcastle in November, so I guess they should not be too hard to find. I seems to remember someone mention that they have seen one on the sale a couple of weeks ago?

Maple, you could tuck the strap under the flap of the Zinia I was tempted by one of those in gunmetal a while back
