I am hoping to invest in one go-to clutch or bag for the 1-2 galas a year I attend for work. If you could only have one clutch or small bag for formal events what would it be? I tend to wear neutral colored gowns like black, gold, navy, and forest greens. My only requirement is that it holds an iPhone (non-Max). Are Chanel mini flaps appropriate for such events?

Yes, Chanel mini flaps or if you want more durability then a Chanel WOC in caviar. However, I think lambskin will look very elegant and you could fit more. YSL also has nice clutches.

BV stretch knot (I don’t have one yet)
I keep looking for a unique knot on the secondary market
and I get distracted by other things

if one was a traditionalist, satin knot may be the dressiest

while I love the Judith Lieberman pieces, they don’t mesh with my personal style

ETA: perhaps a kelly longue wallet as a clutch (I have a black box one, PHW) it fits an iPhone

This is me as well! I considered a knot years ago but it didn’t fit my phone. I should see if there are larger styles that can accommodate.

Bottega Veneta also made a beautiful little bag called the mini Montebello. Unfortunally now only available on secondary market. It’s my go-to evening carry fits an iPhone, skinny card case, lippy, and a couple of keys. Comes with a detachable crossbody chain also comfortable as a handheld clutch. Mine is chartreuse velvet and I’d love to add one of the metallics to my stash.

I use my party clutch so rarely that I've had the same Guess Silver Shrine since 200...7 or 8? Not sure. I also have a black Okay's clutch that O've used a couple of times but since my clothing style is so simple I rather have a clutch with color and some sass.

The Bottega Veneta Chain Knot. It's a little roomier than a regular Knot and can fit a phone. They're discontinued I believe, but when I bought mine, they were still available at the BV outlets and Saks off fifth in a range of colors, and I picked black, but was also tempted by China Red.
I have also used the Dior Promenade pouch, which has a detachable chain. Another big plus -- it holds more than a wallet on chain, while still being a small bag. Sadly, this one is discontinued. Chanel has a few clutch bags but again, most of them are discontinued.

I would get a Chanel WOC in black, beige or grey. I think the woc is more appropriate for formal events than the mini flaps. JMO! If I did want to use a mini flap then I’d use a mini square flap over the mini rectangular flap. Can you telll...I favor the woc! I think it’s the perfect clutch because it can go formal and you can use it for travel, in a larger tote, for running errands, etc.
