So I am shopping at Walmart and getting some diapers and some cleaning supplies and such. I had my 4 year old with me and he had a splinter. I grabbed some tweezers off of the shelf, opened them up and got the splinter out of his finger since he kept complaining about it. I set the little wrapper thing in my cart so they could scan it later when I checked out.

I paid for everything and the bill was about 80 something dollars. On my way out I get stopped by two men who tell me that they are from the loss prevention department and that they want the tweezers back. I was shocked! I had completely forgoten about the little platic thing they came in because it was right by my BIG purse. I was carrying a large purse and did not even see it.

I apologized and told them I would pay for them right away. They would not let me. They escorted me to the back and were yelling at me telling me that I am setting a horrible example for my son and that they should take me to jail to teach me a lesson. My son was scared, I was scared and I had no idea what to do because I was so flustered. I told them that it was an honest mistake, but they said they did not believe me because they were opened and the tweezers were in my purse. I admit, that was not the smartest thing to do, but I honestly had every intention of paying for them. I asked them why I would pay for everything in my cart and not a pair of 1 dollar tweezers and they said I was copping an attitude and that they were calling the police. The police were in the front of the building by that time. I had no idea what to do.

Long story short, they took my picture, took down all of my info and told me that I am never allowed inside walmart ever again. They said I would get a fine in the mail and that I was lucky I did not go to jail. I just cannot believe this happened to me. It was an honest mistake. My husband said that I should have argued with them because it was only a buck and they could not do anything and that I should not have signed any papers, but I did because my son was scared. They kept talking to him and telling him how I was a horrible person. It was awful. The funny thing is that I rarely ever shop in Walmart because I am just not a big fan of Walmart, but I just wanted to hurry and get it done before my older son got out of school so I went there instead of Target. So now this place has all my social info and DL number and my house address and I am apparently a criminal. I am just at a loss for words. I can understand that it might have looked bad that I opened them and used them, but I just dont understand why they would not let me pay for them and leave and why they needed to cause such a horrible scene like I was a bad person. I cried and was in tears. This is just awful and now I guess I have a big fine to pay along the lines of 100-500 dollars or something. SIGH...I just needed to vent. I cannot believe I am banned from Walmart for something I didnt even mean to do over a stupid DOLLAR pair of tweezers. :crybaby:

That is outrageous! Over a cheap pair of tweezers! I'm sorry that happened to you and your poor son... it's like they don't even THINK that it doesn't make sense that you would steal something like that. Really too bad.

Ridiculous of them. I hate Wal-Mart. I love (sarcasm here) how they preach the moral high-ground here when their company has such a poor reputation with ethics.

I'd feel devastated about that treatment too. I hope you can heal from the way they acted. It would take me awhile. It was a silly mistake on your part, not stealing.

:wtf::wtf: Im sorry im just in COMPLETE shock that they would treat you like this! Like if their store was anything damn special!!! How DARE they say those things to your son about you...I would call a Lawyer, dont know if that could help but seriously, they need to be taught that they cant treat people like that. Over a pair of a dollar tweezers?! Give me a f%^*ing break!!!!!!! I've had friends when I was a teenager steal WAAAAAAAAAAY more expensive stuff (not that Im for it) and they NEVER got caught! Looks like they could have probably caught someone who was probably stealing something expensive but decided to direct their attention to you instead. Which walmart was it may I ask? I would LOVE to write them a letter saying how rude and a**holes they are....

And wait a sec- I watched on 20/20 a few months back that they are suppose to even do anything like this if the merchandise was under $25. They went against their own company policy. Idiots.

Are you kidding me?

OMG... I would have had to open up a can of whoop-ass. They had no right to treat you like that, especially since you bought other stuff. They must have it on the security camera that you used the tweezers to get your son's splinter out.

I don't know what to tell you ... can you speak to the manager of Wal-Mart or contact corporate? That's TOTALLY out of line...

I am so upset just hearing about this.

Sometimes it feels like security people wish they could have been police and get REALLY overzealous when it comes to their actions... chip on their shoulder.

OMG - that has to be one of the craziest stories I have ever heard! I can't understand why they wouldn't just take your word that it was an honest mistake (especially after buying the other $80 worth of stuff!! WTH???) and let you just pay for it and get out?! It sounds like they were stalking you or something. Your poor son - that's the part that sickens me the most - that they did this to you in front of your boy. Power tripping a$$es.

Chin up. I'm so sorry.

^^^ITA - that is just horrible. you made and honest mistake. if you were going to "steal" a lousy pair of tweezers, why keep the packaging?
you were totally taken advantage of by security guards who were looking to show they were "working" - contact the corporate office and explain that it was an honest mistake and want them to contact the police and void the action. sorry you were so upset.

OMG! This is making me so mad! HOW DARE they tell your son that you're a horrible person!! OMG this makes me so mad! I'm so sorry this happened to you. It makes me not want to go to Walmart anymore! grrrrr.

.....I am never allowed inside walmart ever again. ...

no big loss there!
they were bullying you - a**holes. some of these store security guards couldn't make it as cops so they have a big chip on their shoulder and love to harrass moms, kids, grandmas, etc. can you imagine if they did become real cops?:wtf: unfortunately the law is on their side and doesn't make a lot of room for mistakes. if they were decent guys they would have realized you just made a mistake (let them try to haul a kid around all day long and see if they don't overlook something) allowed you to pay and give you a warning. they had no right to traumatize your son, they aren't his parents. I would write a letter to the President of Mal-Wart (um, Wal-Mart) and explain what happened but take responsibility for your lapse. I can see the security guys putting the fear of God into some jerks who were trying to rip off the store for 100's or 1000's of dollars but sheesh - they could have used some common sense here. thats part of being a cop afterall.

Ridiculous of them. I hate Wal-Mart. I love (sarcasm here) how they preach the moral high-ground here when their company has such a poor reputation with ethics.

Agreed. I refuse to shop at Wal-Mart because of the ways they mistreat their female employees and also because they sell weapons and ammunition. You've given me yet another reason to never shop there.

At this point I am so upset that I was treated this way that I just want to pay the stupid fine and never ever ever go back there again. I refuse to spend any money in a place like that where they can treat someone so badly. They said they had followed me around the store and watched me the whole time. They took my picture and said I am going in the system to never be able to step foot in there again or else I wold be arrested. They told my son that they were sorry that I would do this to him and to not do what I do because he would go to jail. I am just in utter shock. My husband said that because I signed the papers, that I am admitting that I commited a misdemeanor. I am sure that is probably true, but they had threatened to have the cops escort me to the police dept and have someone come pick my son up while I did the paperwork there. I was scared and I had no idea what else to do, but my hubby said I should have fought it. I am just not going to do anything. Pay the stupid fine and never go there again. I am humiliated, ashamed and embarrassed. I just am in shock.

Idiots! I would of just left, and if they layed one finger on me sued the hell out of them. That's after I threw a couple of bucks at them for the damn tweezers. Ridiculous, they have no right to treat you like that!
