Hi, I'm new to Cartier and purchased a RG love ring recently. Is it normal for Cartier to sell rings that have probably already been tried on by others and already have scratches on them?

Background:
In the store the SA only gave me two rings to choose from. Both were a little scratched with what I thought were hairline scratches. I wasn't sure if that was normal or if there was an option to ask for a brand new ring that had never been tried on by anyone so I just picked one of the two. The next morning when I was putting the ring on I noticed a deep scratch through one of the screw motifs and texted my SA to let her know. Unfortunately I ended up texting the wrong number and I didn't realize it until almost a week later when I double checked the number. I finally got in touch with the SA and brought the ring back to the store. During the week I was waiting for a reply I did not wear the ring (it was really hard not to though!!).

However, the SA looked at the ring and told me the scratches implied I already wore it and therefore not eligible for exchange. She said she would have noticed all the scratches before selling it to me. She did try to polish it, which removed some of the hairline scratches but not the deep scratch. I was extremely disappointed because the ring was sold to me in that condition.

Back to my original questions - is it normal to be sold a ring with scratches already on it and not be given options to select unworn, untried on rings?

Thank you for reading, I have been bitten by the Cartier bug and want to grow my collection but this experience has left me really disappointed.

Don’t take no for an answer! Say that she missed the deep scratch. Get everything down in an email and I wouldn’t communicate anymore to this SA. We pay so much money for these items. This is not good enough. We are not fools! If you are nice and soft spoken (I am) they will walk all over you, try not to let them as hard as it is.

I looked at the Love rings a few times before actually making the purchase. Each time I did see the SA inspect them for scratches. One of the times, I caught a tiny scuff on one of them (I thought it could be a smudge) and the SA took it and said she could no longer sell it. That aside, I’m a little picky and had my SA find me one that was in worn and with a “lucky” serial number. He went through every ring they had till I had the one I liked and he didn’t seem bothered by it at all. So going back to your case, I would definitely try again - maybe show her the text where you accidentally sent to the wrong number (it shows you tried). I hope they resolve it for you… but if you do end up keeping it, just remember that it’s prone to scratches and they will happen anyhow so it’s probably not too bad.

I second that - my Love ring bought in August is now very scratched (I am not doing anything damaging, no gardening, I don't even drive). My Love bracelet has ugly deep scratches from where I banged it against something.
Having said that, don't settle for the scratched ring if it would bother you.

Thanks for the responses! I am keeping the ring and have been wearing it for about a week - it is definitely waaaaay more scratched than when I first bought it, which I was prepared for and don't mind, I just wanted to have been the one to add all the scratches instead of being given the scratches if that makes sense :)

I am planning to get the love ring in WG next and wanted to know what options I have when selecting a ring. @tiffness your SA sounds so wonderfully patient and amazing! Based on my first experience I wasn't sure if Cartier has some sort of policy that didn't allow customers more options when selecting their ring but it sounds like that's not the case. On my next visit I'll make sure to inspect more closely and point out any flaws I see to the SA before purchasing. Thanks for the insight!
