Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack and Anthropologie stores in San Francisco are closing. I am kind of shocked. I knew things were bad but didn’t realize they were that bad. I don’t live in the city but always like to visit for some shopping. I spent a week there in February and I was surprised to see how some stores were empty from both merchandising and customers. I also read in an article that the company that owns the Westfield brand is a french company and they are looking to see all of their US investments. I guess that would include the Westfield Valley Fair. This is the mall closest to me and I thought it was really succesful. Any Bay Area shoppers here, what do you think of these changes.

I've lived in SF for over 26 years now. The downtown area hasn't recovered which is really worrisome. I just read last week that the Saks Off Fifth is closing as well. We also have a Bed Bath & Beyond that is closing. It's a combination of less customers and higher crime. I thought it would get better now that there's less threat of covid but it's just not happening quickly enough.

One of the malls near me is a Westfield - I wonder if that one is going to close also. Honestly, after the mall shooting in Texas today, if I owned a mall I would want to divest it, too.

such a shame that a beautiful city has become so crime-ridden

Some parts of the downtown area are fine. I was just in Union Square yesterday and there's a police presence, no homeless, and it's very clean. So that area looks great. Market Street needs work, which is where the main entrance to the mall is located. It wouldn't be so bad if these areas weren't located so close to one of our "bad" neighborhoods, the Tenderloin. Other more residential areas are clean and safe.
