When my husband and I got married (10 years ago) we couldn't afford an engagement ring. I love him and it wasn't a big deal. Now we have kids, house payments, etc... and still not a lot of money for jewelry. Anyway, I just inherited a necklace from my great-aunt that has a beautiful colorless 1.5 carat diamond in it that was originally her engagement ring (she upgraded and made a necklace) Would you leave it as a necklace or turn it back into a ring and wear it with your wedding band? I've always liked the look on ladies who wear diamond e-rings with their bands every day, but would this be weird since it's not from my husband? And is it worth it for a 1.5 carat or do you think that would look too small (right now it's surrounded by a cluster of smaller diamonds and rubies so it's hard to gauge)? Thanks!

OP, can you please share a picture of the necklace? Would love to have a look. Also, I think think a 1.5ct diamond with or without halo would be beautiful as a ring.

It's in the safe deposit box, but I might be able to get it tomorrow... I'm not sure I love rubies for a wedding ring... Also, it's currently set in yellow gold, but I would want platinum. I'm not sure of the quality or number of smaller diamonds either... any suggestions for style?

it all depends on your personal style, you could go with something more modern like a halo, or perhaps if you choose not to use the melee of rubies and diamonds you could do a tiffany setting (very classic) or even bezel set if you don't like prongs. I suggest going on different jewellery websites and look at rings that you tend to be drawn towards:D

Turn it into a ring if you want; I don't think it's weird that it didn't come directly from your dh. Maybe he can contribute by paying for the resetting?

I have been married for 20 years and never got an engagement ring. I love the look, but I know that I cannot have anything that sits up high because I will do something do it. I had some tanzanite rounds that I purchased many years ago and my mother gave me a ring guard with several diamonds in it. I sent those and a little pouch of scrap gold to a jeweler friend and she traded some of the diamonds in for larger ones and sold the gold to a refiner (she got a higher percentage than I would) and purchased a lovely setting for me. I wear that band as my 20 year band.......here's the kicker....I even got $75.00 back! I tell DH, I saved by spending! LOL.........

Go for it! It doesn't matter that it wasn't given to you by him. When my mother upgraded (her orig e-ring was .8 carats)-she used the diamond from my father's grandmothers ring (about 1.5 carats) and added sapphires on each side.

It will have sentimental value as it's a family heirloom--and you'll have the look you've always wanted!:yahoo:

It's the perfect opportunity to convert it to an e-ring for yourself. I'd suggest a simple cathedral solitaire setting; the 1.5ct alone is going to be eye-catching. Perhaps your dh can splurge on a platinum setting. My dh would be more than happy to contribute to a setting for a diamond I inherited, he knows he will have saved himself from spending for the stone ;)
