Travel Niagara Falls?

Hello!
I want to take a trip up there for a weekend, any suggestions on places to stay/things to see? I want to take my mom there for her birthday, which is coming up soon. We'd like to see the falls obviously, but maybe some other things that aren't so tourist-y. Also, would a day trip to Toronto be possible? We'd be driving up so transportation isn't really an issue. I've been researching online but its always good to hear peoples experiences and suggestions firsthand.

I saw the Niagara Falls and you can take the tour, but I'm not sure what else there is to do. I'm sure there is enough to keep you busy for a weekend, but not sure what. It's massive and impressive though!

I found the same to be true of Mt. Rushmore.

We went about 5 years ago- stayed at the Embassy Suites, and got a room on the corner that had an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling windows looking out right over the Canadian side of the falls. It was beautiful! Besides the falls and the tour you can go on there, we went to the butterfly observatory(http://www.niagaraparks.com/garden/butterfly.php), Niagra-on-the-Lake(http://www.niagaraonthelake.com/), the casino that's there, and the botanical gardens(http://www.niagaraparks.com/garden/botanical.php). We were only there a couple of days, but I'm sure we could have found more to do. It was really a beautiful place, and we probably just could have gotten room service and sat in our room and watched the fireworks over the falls and been happy all day! And Toronto is right there- our friend who works in the city drove over to have dinner with us, and she said it only took her about 20 minutes to get to our hotel.

Gosh there are a bunch of threads in this section with great information on Niagara Falls, have you done a search already to read through them?

I've been a few times. There's not a lot to do, but definitely go to the Canadian side...the view of the Falls from that side is much better, and there's more shops, restaurants and bars on that side.

Yes, I have searched but only found two threads. I found some good info from them, but I was looking for ideas about going to Toronto as well.

There's also Niagara on the Lake on the Canadian side which is lovely. Lots of little art shops and cafes. If you like wildlife art there's a guy there called Edward Spera that has a shop selling really detailed prints / originals. I bought a canvas when I was over of a Grizzly bear and it's stunning.

The Maid of the Mist tour is good but WET!! Stand on the RIGHT side of the boat if you want a close up of the falls.:nuts:

Niagara Falls (the city) is a bit of a dump TBH - lots of tacky stores selling utter rubbish.

We stayed in Toronto and took a bus tour to Niagara Falls so you should be able to do it the other way round. You could take in a winery (Inneskillen is good) and try some of the ICE WINE. It's very sweet (more a desert wine) but yummy!:graucho:

If you stayed a night in Toronto you could take in a show [I was lucky enough to catch The Lord of the Rings when I was over and thought it was brilliant]. Can't remember the exact name of the hotel we stayed in but it was a former bank "1001 somthing" I think.

You could do a city tour of Toronto - they have a hop on / hop off bus which allows you to wander round some of the places - there's a one day or 2 day pass if you were having a long weekend.

Niagara falls, land of my birth.

Go to the falls on the Canadian side, enjoy all the touristy stuff (haunted houses, tacky restaurants, gambling etc), but after that, I'd strongly suggest going to Toronto to take in some fun and culture or driving to Rochester and hitting the outlet malls. The malls will always be there so I think Toronto is the move.

I lived in Toronto last year! it was fun, hit me up for fun stuff to do in Toronto proper! But try to do your shopping in the States unless you see something you'd die without!

Def. stay on the Canadian side. I recommend doing the helicopter tour of the falls, awesome views! I am a fan of all the little touristy things if it's your first time going:Check out all the 'Clifton Hills' attractions, there's tons of fun wax museums, a heated ferris wheel, hershey store, etc. There is an IMAX where you can catch a quick movie about the falls, then they have a cool falls museum there with all the barrels people have used to go over. The Skylon tower has an awesome observation deck, def. check it out.

We stayed at the Niagra Falls Hilton, I loved it! It connects to the Casino and they have an excellent restaurant on the top floor, the Watermark. Great food! Def. check out the wine coutry too. THey have a few wineries that have bed and breakfasts if youre looking for a less touristy experience. I also recommend trying the icewine! It's too sweet and syrupy for me, but several wineries sell an icewine champagne that is out of this world! We had to buy a case to take home!

I haven't been to Toronto yet but plan to go the next time we visit Niagara. Have a fun trip!!!:biggrin:
