My knowledge in the 'authenting a Coach' . I'm on overload on info on how to distinguish the difference between a handbag being genuine or knock-off. At last, I am still very unclear on if my bag is a genuine Coach. Serial #N°E3X-9950. It is a solid black leather, crossbody style, bag. Pics attached. Help! Please?!?!

I think the x designation might have to do with the bag being made specifically for an after market store (like tj max etc). The construction of the strap and structure of the buckle remind me of the hippy cross bodies from the late 1990s/ early 2000s.

I don’t mind answering your question even if it’s not under “authenticate this,” but others on here are sticklers for structure. You’d probably get the most responses there, and the more opinions the better. If the seller isn’t asking much, this bag might be worth the purchase.

That's not true for where that X is located.

We would like to direct all members to ask authentication questions only in the appropriate AT thread so the forum doesn't get cluttered with stuff. Anyway, the OP has never been back.

It's important that posters, especially new members, be given ACCURATE information based on facts and experience. Guesses don't help anyone and often send newbies on their way with seriously bad information. It's happened before and someone was told that her perfectly genuine Coach was "probably fake" based on some hazy memory of a style and situationdifferent from the one being discussed. The poster was never seen again and some legitimate seller may have been unjustly accused of trying to cheat her by selling her a counterfeit.

That's just one of the reasons why authentications AND opinions not based on solid facts about details on a "Coach" should be answered by the people who are qualified to answer correctly. Whateve is absolutely correct about the X in the serial number prefix having nothing to do with the bag being made for an aftermarket store - IT WASN'T.

You said "I don’t mind answering your question even if it’s not under “authenticate this,” but others on here are sticklers for structure." But we, the authenticators, DO mind, giving inaccurate information doesn't help anyone, including the OP or the reputation of these forums. If someone isn't experienced enough to qualify as an authenticator and earn the "authenticator" designation under their ID, just point confused posters to the correct thread and let the recognised experts handle the questions.

If you do a little reading on the Coach Authenticate This thread, it will help you better understand the comments of the authenticators above. While questions and discussions are encouraged there, my own opinion is that more opinions are not necessarily better. Knowledge is better. Coach has been heavily counterfeited for at least 25 years. Fortunately on the Coach AT forum there is a wealth of knowledge to learn from. Welcome!

I rarely follow coach anymore and rarely this forum (for this reason)- the comments to this self admitted newbie seem pretty snarky and unwelcoming. There’s no need for such unwelcoming behavior.

As for authentication, I doubt anyone here can provide a 100% guarantee that anything is completely authentic unless they’re holding the purse in their hands and examining it, and even then there are some very good fakes (though probably not for coach as much as premier brands given the profit margin). Photos only provide so much information.

I think the more opinions the better. Sorry if I stepped in toes. I would’ve have ventured an opinion if others were kinder. Who knows if this newbie will have the courage to repost to authenticate this?

So your points are taken, but those are mine.

It takes a lot of courage to post when you’re a newbie and I think multiple members could be kinder. I don’t regret my post and apologize if I inadvertently provided misinformation (it was to the best of my understanding). That said, this isn’t brain surgery and to my knowledge, nobody died due to my original post. So it’s probably not the end of the world. And that’s great

I completely agree that it takes a lot of courage to post as a newbie! This is said as a middle aged woman who came into the age of technology later than most! I literally lurked for six months before posting tPF. That is my style because I was completely intimidated by posting (yes, really lol, to those of you who read my sometimes long winded posts!). So I had read a lot of posts, and got a feel for the tone of the threads here, in a manner of speaking. I participated in the threads where I felt I had something in common to share or where I felt there were members who could give me answers I was looking for. So I felt very welcomed as a new poster. Lots of people lurk, and I would like to let them know about my positive experience here as well.
I started out reading but not participating in the eBay discussion boards around 2005 ish. Even back then there were authenticity guides for vintage Coach, that have been updated , have stood the test of time, that are posted as mentioned above.
I don’t disagree with your comments regarding the fact there are very good fakes out there. Perhaps you will take time to read through the first post of AT in the Shopping subforum to see all the info requested to authenticate, and read through AT posts at random, to see how the authenticators come to their conclusions, some of which are that they cannot authenticate the item, based on the photos/info provided by the poster at hand.

My opinion stands that knowledge is better than opinion and that the authenticators on this forum are the only thing standing between me as a buyer and sellers that are lazy, ignorant and/or dishonest.

So let us simply agree to disagree!

I do agree lol, this is not brain surgery and no one is dying over these posts! It’s not the end of the world? Great

Two views posted above to consider:

1- "I think the more opinions the better."

and

2- "knowledge is better than opinion"

I'm going with number Two.

If I have a mysterious illness, it's very possible that more than one opinion by DOCTORS specializing in that particular field would be better than just one.

However, multiple opinions, no matter how many, by the PATIENTS sitting in those doctors' respective waiting rooms would be much LESS preferable to the opinions of the experienced medical specialists, or even just one medical specialist, who have actually studied the subject.

Your mileage may vary, of course.
