Hello, I want to buy a right hand ring for fun, over 1 carat for the center stone, but more concerned with facing up looking substantial vs the actual carat weight. I will probably choose a cushion or an oval center stone.
I have been reading up for awhile now, but I want to make sure that I have my facts straight.

Fact or fiction?? Here are some of the "facts" I have read, but I know the internet is not always correct:
1. A cushion cut will look smaller on the finger than the same carat weight in a round brilliant or oval. Does an oval look smaller than a round brilliant at the same carat weight, or does it depend on the dimensions?
2. A cushion cut needs to be excellent/excellent for polish and symmetry. Is very good ever OK? Is good ever OK?
3. A modified brilliant cushion will not have the "crushed glass" look if it has excellent/excellent for cut specs. Is there a risk if it is very good symmetry? (I prefer facets to crushed glass).
4. A cushion cut will look warmer at the same color grade. I am color sensitive! Does an oval also look warmer at the same color grade?
5. Florescence can cause a stone to look cloudy/milky and it is more of a risk in cushion cut compared to a round brilliant?

Thank you for any input! I sent a message to Ame with the diamonds I am considering, but I'm not sure if she is on the boards currently.

I used to write a blog about this, wish it could help you with your first question - The shapes of diamond rings
If you just want to have a ring for fun and want the diamond looks bigger, an oval cut will be good. But you need to pay attention to the length-to-width ratio of oval cut.

For your other questions, I am not professional enough to answer them. Wish someone else could let us know, I am also curious!
Thank you very much! I enjoyed reading your blog, especially in learning about the ideal proportions for fancy shapes and in which shapes look smaller vs larger, as well as which make the fingers look longer/shorter. I think I will aim for an oval this time around.
As far as the other questions, I cannot answer them specifically, but I was grateful to get a message from Ame with very good advice, and one tip to pass on to others is that she recommended not to buy a cushion cut without seeing it in person, since the appearance can vary so much. Of course this may not apply to experts, but I am certainly not one!
