Ok so I am new to jewelry. I would to get a pair of diamond stud earrings 1.5-2 carrots and I have no idea what I am doing. I Know it will take me some time to purchase but I would like a general idea of some things. When I am looking online at lets say earrings that say they are 1.5 cts does that mean together or each? Also they do not need to be perfect flawless diamonds but really nice would be good. What grade am I looking for? I am just starting out so please forgive me if I am asking obvious questions. I went to look today to get an idea and the ones I saw were 1.5 cts and were 11k:nuts: Is this the right price range? Thanks ladies : )

1.5 cts refers to the two together. So each earring would be .75 cts. In earrings, you want nice cut and good color, but the clarity can be slightly less perfect. If I was looking, I would want good cut, and a G-H color, SI1 or SI2. Read up about the different grades and try to get into a good jeweler who can show you. You may even like an H-I color. It depends on your preference. 11k for a 1.5 ct pair is crazy. Was that in a jewelry store? I have bought jewelry from overstock and I pay a lot of attention to the reviews. I have gotten some great deals, but I haven't purchased studs yet.

You can get a really good idea of prices for various sizes, cuts, colors and clarities by searching bluenile.com. I agree with LaurieLou:

1. Best cut you can find
2. G-I color
3. SI1 or SI2

it should read 1.5cttw = carat total weight which would mean as a set they equal 1.5.
Yes, $11k is too much for that weight
No, do not look for flawless or even near flawless. IMO you could easily look for H-I color w/ ideal/excellent cut and as low as SI1 or SI2 clarity as no one, NO ONE will be able to see any inclusions on your ears :D
Cut is KING, do not cut the corners on the cut of the stones, sacrifice a little color and clarity as no one will know, but do not sacrifice cut, it makes all the difference.
An excellent/ideal cut can make I color stones look white :smile1:

Check w/ local jewelers first, seeing stuff IRL give you better perspective when researching online.

Thanks so much ladies. It was not a jewelry store, it was Macy's. Thanks so much I am so much I am off to do more research. I am so excited about getting some beautiful earrings : )

You should check out pricescope.com. The people over there will be able to hold your hand through the buying process. You do not need a high clarity for diamonds that will be in your ears - too hard to tell the difference from that distance.

It depends on the specs of the diamonds you were looking at, but for example I sell 2ctw studs cert'd SI1-2, F-G color for $6500-$6800 depending on rap price that week. Good luck in your search.
