A few months ago, someone reported small leather goods and ready to wear at the Century 21 Department Store locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

I was there today and report the following:

2 cashmere shawls - one brown (damaged) and one light grey for $299.90
1 fluffy off white scarf - looked nasty, didn't bother checking the price

1 rack of RTW at 50% off C21's original retail price, bringing the pieces to about 80% off retail. Nothing earth-shaking, just a few pairs of pants, a yellow suede skirt with some kind of stain and some unremarkable tops.

1 rack of new Fall RTW, including a scarf-print blouse (size 8) for $399. Again, generally unremarkable pieces -- a couple of sweaters, some slacks.

If you're in town and curious, it's worth stopping by. Scarves are on the 2nd floor off the escalator and the RTW are on the 3rd floor.

I wonder where C21 gets their goods from...resellers? consignment stores? Cos I thought H destroyed their defective goods...:shrugs:

To spare a trip for those who were burning with curiosity over the shawls, I was in the neighborhood and stopped by for a peek.

I can report the following:

(1) the fluffy white thing is indeed hideous, a bit more so to the touch. The label said mohair and the original retail was supposedly $1385. :wtf:

(2) The gray scarf had a tonal geometric "H" pattern on it. Although the label looked ok (to my amateur eye) it said the scarf was a combination of silk and cashmere, and unless I had heat stroke, that was the strangest blend of silk and cashmere ever. It was super thin and felt exactly like cotton. Supposedly the original retail was also $1385.

(3) The brown shawl/scarf I didn't see up close, as it was being held behind the counter for another customer. It looked like it might possibly be made of cashmere. The crazy lady at the counter wouldn't even let me examine it and whisked away the Hermes tray with the other two before I was done looking.

Her: These are expensive scarves! They can't be out!!!!

Me: Erm . . . I'm looking at them.

Her: They are all $300!!! You want them? I have to put them away!!!

Me: *stunned silence* wondering how scarves in the cases can get sold without being out.

Anyway, I managed to get a shot off of the sketchy wares before the scarf lady absconded with the tray (honestly I think they look nicer in the picture than irl).

I was so skeeved out by the whole experience that I took a walk over to the Wall Street H to make up for it. :p

I love your report, so entertaining I nearly spilt my drink over my laptop :roflmfao:

Thanks, zrusky7, xiaoxiao, boo and Ms Birkin! Writing it, I felt a bit like an undercover investigative reporter!

boo - You TOTALLY have to go see (and touch) the white fluffy scarf for yourself! Maybe we can get a tally of how many TPFers can lay hands on that particular tactile terror before it actually sells!:roflmfao:
