New Ebay policy for photos

This is absurd! How on earth are people supposed to know what they are getting if the pictures are someone else's? The sellers of counterfeit items are are going to have a field day with this.... Grrrr....

I will certainly check this out closer, but the way it was explained to eBay Education Specialists was that this was for eBay's use only. They want to use the photos for THEIR advertising purpose. Do you have a link from eBay that says it will be available to anyone who wants to use it? Does it also say that they would be able to use it in their own listing?

All educations specialists have always been taught to instruct the seller that they should use their own photographs. Something does not add up.

Upon further review, I still do not see where eBay would encourage anyone to use someone else’s photo. In fact, at the bottom of this official version from eBay, they address that issue.

"What do I do if someone else submits my photo under their user ID?
You should report any activity that you believe infringes on your intellectual property rights immediately through the VeRO program. You can report the problem here."

The comments I see on the discussion boards about this are just supposition on eBay’s intent. Nothing is shown to support that. I know there are some who suspect everything eBay does, and some of this is earned by eBay, but in this case, there is nothing sinister about it.

IMHO they will NOT allow or encourage others to use someone else’s photo. Just the opposite, since they will give credit and a link to you store in any picture used.

That was my understanding too, but on Auctionbytes there is an update that quotes Griff as saying sellers CAN use photos in the product catalog. And also that no watermarked photos would be selected.

Also, this seems weird to consider for handbags and designer items, but if you sold a generic widget and eBay selected your photo for the product catalog, it makes more sense. Anyone surfing the catalog would be directed to your listing. (Just as an example - I don't sell generic widgets.)

Do you happen to have the link? I just came back from AuctionBytes and could not find it. That is not surprising for me, but i would love to see what is said.

I can't help but think that will be corrected. As others have said, it would be insane, since they preach taking an original picture of the exact item to be sold.

Fortunately I still had it open, or I wouldn't have found it either.
