Heyy I need help XD so I’m new I just found out about this forum cuz I’m struggling whether i wanna get a new bag or not. Okay so I bought a new Gucci Ophidia Round bag back in June 2020 from Vestiaire, it’s my first designer bag and I think that’s a pretty good deal (its lower than retail price) . But due to the coronavirus, I don’t have the chance to go out and use it so its still brand new sitting in my wardrobe now. But now I saw the Gucci Mini Marmont Matelasse and I love it !

So im struggling now, should i sell the ophidia bag and get the marmont bag? If i sell the ophidia bag i will probably lose money but i think i love the marmont more cuz its just much more practical because of the size and the design off course. Or should i keep the ophidia and save money to buy the marmont bag? What do you guys think? Do u think ophidia or marmont will be trendy for say 10 years after? I really need some opinions now. Thanks!! xx

My advice is always buy what you love, not merely bc it’s a good deal.(after decades of shopping, I try but don’t always succeed in both). Both bags are popular, and the ophidia you have is circular, so that adds some interesting qualities if you are a fan of circular bags. I think TPF consensus is the ophidia line is a classic and the marmont is overplayed (bc the marmont was so popular). The matelasse is reminiscent of YSL, chanel chevron and many others, so I feel it stands the test of time. I personally prefer the Marmont Style and feel that the gucci monogram and the circular design is too 1980s. But, I’m 53 years old, and the 1980s is not a style era that I want to revisit.

However, there is definitely room in a collection for both If you know that you will wear both. IMO the circular may be best with lighter wash or white denim and casual clothes and possibly skew summer, whereas the marmot matalesse could be p (darker jeans, slacks, dresses).

You also mentioned that you are at the beginning of a bag journey. At the start, people sometimes churn through, buy and sell quite a bit before figuring out what works. I still have certain bag regrets that I sold too soon (if you do so, you may find that you will yearn to repurchase). You will certainly be able to find another ophid8a, but I don’t know if a circular one is hard to find. Sometimes it helps to create outfits in your closet to see if a current bag works in your wardrobe. JMO! Have fun deciding Adn don’t rush yourself! If you decide to keep the ophidia, I follow the advice of @doni and the wise members on the shop your closet thread. https://forum.purseblog.com/threads...-slg-collection-any-one-else.1038094/page-123. Simply wear the ophidia everywhere: to the grocery, pharmacy, park. (@doni, I was editing this to add you, before I saw your post below, and I didn’t want to say 1970s bc then I’d feel, gasp, old,)

if you decide to sell and you don’t get a consignor quote or price you want, you can always change your mind and keep the bag, and/or let it go, and chalk it up to the cost of learning to refine your taste! @papertiger and @doni said it much more succinctly below!

If at the moment you find no chance to wear your bags, why not wait until you do and then you consider it? It does not make much difference to substitute one for the other if they are going to sit in the closet.

In the meantime, you can try to carry your Ophidia whenever you leave the house even if it is nothing special. It is a crossbody so very practical and you can wear it to the supermarket or whenever you have a walk. Then you get a taste of carrying a designer bag and why it doesn’t need to be just for special occasions or going out. The value of the bag won‘t be much affected as you bought pre-loved already.

Personally, I don’t think the Marmont line will be around in 10 years time but I thought it would be over by now and it is still going strong so what do I know. The Gucci monogram can be very 80s as @880 says :P or more like 70s in the case of the Ophidia line, but it has been around a long time. But I would not worry about what will happen in 10 years. You seem to be young and these are your first designer bags, just get what you love and what you are going to use, and then it is money well spent.

1. Gucci always rides a trend-wave, both these bag styles were 'seventh waves' and very popular.

2. Gucci always reissues popular bag styles. You have to decide when you like trends, as an early-adopter and trendsetter, when it's at its height of fashionability, when it's mainstream or after the fact as a diehard fan. The Marmont is certainly mainstream by now as even the high-street has been copying.

3. Despite the precursor GAC (vintage) sig-print coated canvas being sold 'everywhere' in the 1980s and at a a more reasonable price point than all leather, they have maintained their resale.

4. Only you can know which one will suit you better. If only having one is important really think that if after you sell the Ophidia whether you may regret it. Since you will invariably lose money on the 'O', you could keep and start saving for a different (Gucci) all-leather bag, even a pre-loved Marmont at some unspecified future time.

It seems silly to sell a bag (at a loss) that is sitting on a shelf and replace with another bag that will sit on a shelf. As someone else suggested, you should carry and enjoy the bag whenever you can and you can always sell down the road. As for my personal opinion, I prefer the Ophidia line. And my 17 year old, very fashion forward daughter is lusting over the round Ophidia that you have.

Welcome to the Purse Forum, such a great community of bag enthusiasts and lovers of beautiful things.
I enjoyed reading the responses above. You’ve been given some great advice.

I also subscribe to buy and wear what you love, whether it is new, commonly seen everywhere or discontinued. I like to choose bags for my current lifestyle and needs as opposed to what I think I might like and use in the future (because I don’t know what I’ll be doing with certainty.) Looking backwards 10 years ago, I used to love totes and shoulder bags. Now my favourite styles are crossbody bags, top handle bags with a long strap and bags with versatile carry options. I agree it’s hard to get a true idea of our bag use during Covid. I’ve given myself permission to not get rid of anything at the moment.

Some possible questions to consider,
1) Do I love and want to keep my Ophidia? You’ll need to carry it and get acquainted to make this assessment, can you carry it to get groceries, to the pharmacy, to the post office, to borrow from @doni
2) How do I think the Marmont will fit into my existing wardrobe, style and lifestyle?
3) Is there a place for both in my bag wardrobe?
4) Am I willing to keep the Ophidia and save up for the Marmont?

Best wishes on your journey. I hope you have fun.

Yep this is really well said and I can relate to it! I think i will definitely wait for a while, since i only go out once a month for now haha. Idk why i always think that i have to buy immediately once i saw something i like cuz im scared it will be sold out. So most of my purchase are impulse purchase actually and I might have to work on that haha. Thank you so much for your advice, that really helps! ❤️
