There's a ring I've been looking at in a local jewelry shop, and it's gorgeous. But it's designer, and honestly, I think it's a bit overpriced. I don't want to insult the shopkeeper/owner, as it's a nice place, and I like peeking in there every now and again, but I would like to negotiate a lower price. Granted, it's cheaper in his shop than online, but it could be worth finding out if he is willing to go lower.

I don't look like his usual clientele, but I'm hoping that won't make a difference. I've done business with him before, on very small items (repairs, etc.). My mother went to him as well, but I doubt if they remember her.

I've never done this, and I don't want to be impolite, especially given how it could be perceived. Any comments or advice would be appreciated.

We never buy jewelry at tag price. Whatever the price is, knock 20% off {or whatever} in your head and ask "could you take $xxx instead?"

With the economy bad you can name your own price, i bet they rather sell then have it sitting there. I normally do my research on a piece before offering though. i take into consideration gold weight and stone value at wholesale and x 2 for design.

if they are asking 500. i would offer 300 and they might just meet at 400.
