I bought a Mackage jacket which I have been wanting for over a decade now off a secondhand site (not sure if we can name sources lol). Unfortunately, it's in poorer condition than it looked in the seller's original pictures. Most notable disappointments are the white paint? stain on the left sleeve, the stains, snag and pulls in the lining that were not disclosed in the original description. I know this jacket sold for around $500+ish ($350ish actually, if on sale) back in 2009/2010, but this purchase went from being "Omg what a steal at this condition!" to, "I guess the price is reflective of its condition". I paid $104.51 for this.

In your expert opinion, is a jacket one has wanted for over a decade worth keeping in this condition, for the price? Or should I just hold out for one in better condition but probably at a higher price point as well? I've seen some in better condition that were about $30 more to hundreds more. I missed out on the $30 more one, and kicking myself right now. I am so torn and disappointed, and the seller is saying she didn't see this mark during inspection before shipping.

The post's original photos are pretty grainy, but I think I can see some of the wear on that sleeve, and possibly the white mark but hard to say for sure. I know my hubby took photos of damage on our fridge with an iphone 6 and iphone 14 and you couldn't see the damage with the iphone 6, so I'm wondering if that might also be the case here.

Should I return or drop the case? I just feel like if I had known beforehand the full condition of the item, maybe I could have justified the price still... but thinking it was in better condition than it was, and it arrived in worse condition, it made me feel cast down and that it was actually more expensive than it should have been.

You could probably have the lining dry cleaned and the leather touched up with a cleaner/conditioner. Depends if you want to invest in it, take it as is or return. It's up to you
I appreciate your opinion. Would you happen to know/have experience on whether stains might come out from a lining after dry cleaning? Or will it just be clean, but still stained?

I would not hesitate to return it. The lining is disgusting in its threadbare and stained condition. Clearly, that jacket has never been cleaned. You will be shocked to learn how expensive it is to clean leather clothing (and I doubt the baked in stains will ever come out of the lining after all these years).

I think the answer also depends on your outlook. Will you always look at the jacket with a sense of disappointment and feeling like you settled for it, or will you think "well, this jacket has clearly been on some adventures"? If the former, you should probably return, and if the latter, get it cleaned as well as you can (though it may be expensive) and wear it out on some adventures of your own.

There's no right or wrong answer, but be honest with yourself. I have some secondhand items that I think look cooler because they aren't pristine, and other items that I returned asap due to undisclosed issues.

ETA: I'm sorry that you have to deal with this after being so excited about finally getting your jacket.

you got it for $100 and a new one is around $1,000?
so depends on how much this wear is going to bother you. you could try spot cleaning the lining and then spraying with alcohol and water mixture to disinfect. The outside you could try some cleaner conditioner on. I don't know how someone does this much wear to a leather jacket. I have one that I've worn for over fifteen years (soft lambskin) and it has no visible signs of wear. Maybe she was a biker.

I'd return it. More likely than not, once this jacket is "cleaned" the leather will not feel the same
& not sure the stains can be removed. So the question is what are you willing to live with
in terms or wearing that jacket & how disappointed you might be & what you are willing to accept?
We can't answer that only you can
I would not risk any home remedies because if you are not happy with the results, you likely
will not be able to return unless the seller is willing to pay for the areas that you could point out if you
already haven't & a reimbursement will be unlikely
Put your $100 into a jacket that is in better condition, JMO

Thank you everyone who took the time to give advice! I returned it. @piperdog, I loved your perspective about a jacket that's been on adventures. Normally, that's how I am, but I need to know how much beforehand, and I suppose the dishonesty or omission would forever make me eye the jacket differently, so as most of you suggested, back it went.
I ended up finding a different style in better condition for less from the same brand, and excited to have it arrive! But the search continues for my one true love. ^_^

Have a great weekend, all!
