Hiya Ladies,

I've decided to pick a ring as my birthday present this year.. however I have absolutely no idea about jewelry and was hoping that you lovely ladies would offer me some advice??

I've found a ring that I like at my local Jewelers its a marquise cut single stone. It's 0.40ct. Colour D and the Clarity is IF on a platinum band. To my knowledge I know that i've picked the best Colour and Clarity.. and thats as far as my knowledge goes unfortunately. I was also told that I don't have to pick the best colour and clarity just because the naked eye wouldnt be able to tell the difference.. if this is true would it be better for me to go for a bigger size stone and lower the colour and clarity slightly??

The lady has quoted me £1500 for the ring... Could anyone advice me whether this is a good price for this particular ring?? I dont want to be over paying but at the same time I don't want to walk away from a good price either. The jeweler is in a area where theres a lot of competition and theres a pricing war so I'm quite sure I have "some" room to negotiate price wise.

The ring itself is simple, nothing extravagant and I "could" pick this style and look anywhere so I was wondering what you guys thought about the quote and the specs of the ring??

Many thanks for reading and for any advice :flowers:

i think it's overpriced but keep in mind you will pay top dollar for a D/IF stone.
it's hard to judge anything without seeing it and even sometimes on paper, although you did see the stone. is it like an e-ring? i am trying to picture it.

look for a great cut stone if you're looking at diamonds.

The lady took the stone out of it's own little box and showed me the specs of the diamond which was labeled on the box... but even then anyone can write anything and call it anything these days and I "probably" wouldn't be able to tell the difference.. I know its so shameful!

The ring looks exactly like the one in this photo, but the stone is only 0.40ct.. also... I just did a search on some sites recommended by the forum but they're based in the states and im currently back in England for the time being and I noticed the price on whiteflash.com is considerably different to the prices I've seen in the UK!!

I'd visit pricescope.com for better diamond information. Everyone's different but here are some basic guidelines:

1. You can go all the way down to SI1 if the stone is "eye-clean". The jeweler will be able to answer that question. If it's eye clean than it's really no different to the naked eye than an IF and you're saving a ton of money.
2. I personally can't see color until I'm in the H-I range.
3. The biggest judge of a diamond is it's cut. In this case, you need to make sure there's little to no "bow-tie" look (a dark area in the middle that looks like a bow tie).
