So sad. I'm all for power of positive thinking, but celebrities who promote holistic avenues over conventional medicine irritate me. One has the right to do whatever you want with your own body, but people like Suzanne Sommers acting like they know better than physicians who specialize in that sort of thing drives me nuts. Don't promote stupidity to your fans. What a waste of life. She's so young.

I agree about people doing that.

I was SMH reading that article. And now she regrets her decision. Sad.

I'm not saying she made the right choice (I personally would have gone with the surgery) but she didn't just try homeopathic remedies according to the article. She took medication and had radiation, too.

And not all specialists are the experts they think they are, even when they're the head of their department in a US national top 5 cancer hospital. If I had listened to him, I'd likely be dead now (he's still unfortunately there, demoted but still there). Should always get 2nd opinions.

You are right. I overlooked that part. I know we're all different, but if a doctor told me to have surgery to remove cancer, I couldn't schedule it fast enough!

Like I said, I would have gone for the surgery. Her situation/diagnosis seemed pretty cut and dry, if you will. I would have still gotten a 2nd opinion though, because you never know. Doctors can be wrong, labs can be wrong, etc. But, I more meant not trusting big name hospitals and big name doctors just because they're big names.

Reminds me of Steve Jobs. He had the only form of pancreatic cancer that was even remotely treatable and he wasted several months by refusing traditional treatment and only seeking homeopathic options. Eventually he relented but it was too late. We’ll never know whether it would have made a difference if he had started earlier but he might have lived longer.

A friend of mine lost her daughter who’s 27 yo at that time by choosing homeopathic treatment. She had Ca of the tongue and one of the top 3 surgeon that does this kind of Ca operated on her, suggested radiation- that’s it, she refused it. She refused all treatment suggestions by different authorities. She went into meditation, wilderness camping in Washington state and went extreme vegan and raw diet. On her last year, she finally realized her mistake and begged her mom and several doctors for treatment. She did get a palliative chemo, went carnivore until she can’t eat solid food, got her g-tube, etc… became very angry with her choices. It was tough on my friend and us who became her caregiver in some days. She passed away about 1.5 yrs after dx of a curable tongue Ca if appropriately treated leaving my friend so heartbroken and financially devastated.

We have a serious problem with distrust in the medical care system, particularly in the US. And quite frankly, I understand where a lot of it is coming from but it is such a fine line between discernment and ignorance.

Plus now there is so much completely unregulated information on the internet about health. I have a friend that posted something along the lines of kale is causing cancer and ice cream is healthier than salad.

I’m sorry about your friend. That must have been so heartbreaking.

I’ve had people suggest so many wacky “cures”. I don’t even know how people can suspend all logic and reason and make these suggestions that make no sense.

Last one was from a hairstylist who suggested I eat only “G-d’s Foods” and a green diet. It was awkward and I didn’t go back to her for my hair after that.

It was heartbreaking because we all know what’s the best treatment being around this situation everyday but there was no amount of convincing because she’s an adult. She grew up a very traumatic life, her dad who’s a doctor committed suicide and no amount of therapy worked accdg to my friend. She was a tormented soul.

Wishing her well. Stage 4 is tough but glad that she is speaking out. It can help someone out there.
As far as getting a mastectomy, it is a crap shot. My mother died with her breast, her sister did not. At the end, they both died. So I am not so anxious to judge a woman’s decision.
Sorry to be a downer, but when it is your time, it is your time.
