I might consider ordering a MTO handbag. Still trying to decide between Peter Nitz (Zurich) vs Mila Jito (US). I have officially inquired with both but not into detail. Anyone have any experience with both? I also notice Peter Nitz pricing is generally higher maybe because of the currency? How is the craftsmanship?
Craftsmanship from both can’t be faulted nor can materials they choose. Peter and Lili have pretty distinct design languages so your choice might come down to that.

General living costs in Switzerland are sky high so it might push Peter’s prices up a bit. (The price discrepancy)

I also think Peter Nitz is more well known and has better social media presence. I think his pricing is almost Hermes level. That’s my only hesitation. I think Mila Jito’s pricing is acceptable. Still expensive but that’s because they’re bespoke.

I’ve worked with both.

I own 3 Nitz bags, and one Mila Jito.
And they are amazing to work with.

I think it boils down to aesthetics and functionality.

The craftsmanship for both blows current Hermes bags out of the water. There is NO comparison.

When I got my Mila Jito Bag (Induro), I thought to myself, no going back to Hermes now!!!

I have sold most of my Hermes collection. I’m using the proceeds to fuel my bespoke purchases, and jewelry.

I have two Mila Jito bags on order. I should be receiving my Wander bag in the near future. I have a Dearling bag that should be ready in May of 2025.

I’m starting a commission with Peter on a Dawning bag.

If you want a great quality to price bespoke bag you should look into Jetalla Anieu. She is Peter’s student. Her bags are in the $2-3K range. I own a Natalya bag and have a 2nd on order.

Once I receive these bags, I hope I will be at purse peace.

(Who am I kidding!!!)

I would love to hear more about the differences in aesthetic and functionality that you mentioned.
It's so helpful to hear from someone with firsthand experience!

Peter Nitz is a sweet heart to deal with. (I have not ordered a bespoke piece, but dealt with him when he was with Luxury Zurich)

His style and that of Mila J are very different. . . You can see this from their websites.

I ended up going the bespoke path with Duret.com* in Paris (introduced via Leffot trunk show in NY)

Every bespoke job is different. Every artisan has a unique spin. The pieces are hand stitched at a level beyond Hermes and
The leather, especially heritage or exotic is comparable if not better (you will have a choice of hides).

But, it’s up to you whether the aesthetic and the time commitment of bespoke appeals.

*the price of Duret is comparable to Hermes and every stitch is perfection. . .

So very true! Once you reach that realm of quality it’s splitting hairs between makers.

I also was in between Peter Nitz vs Mila Jito last year and in the end went with the Mila Jito. It mostly came down to price for me.

Lili’s work is impeccable and I definitely want to add another bag in the future. I still have Peter Nitz on my wish list, but it’s hard to stomach almost double in price for his bags.

I also have a Jetalla Anieu on order so I can’t speak to the quality yet, but the bag was around 1/4 of what I paid for my Mila Jito. HTH!

It might help one decide re the “romance” of each artisans story

I believe Peter nitz is self taught. I remember before he started, he spoke about doing an evening collection of exotic leathers with semi precious stones

Duret had an artisan work on my bag who herself was a trainer of many years of h crafts people. And he has his own history and reputation in Paris

MJ also had a story, though I don’t recall the details

Many of these artisans have former experience with Hermes or other comparable …

And so on…

I am following this discussion closely. I love the idea of a bespoke bag. I wish that there was a way to see some of these in person before committing to placing an order. They are beautiful in photographs and owners here speak of the bags in such glowing terms.

Hoping you’ll share your experience with Jetalla Anieu bag when you receive it. I have been looking at her IG for almost two years.

I agree that all bespoke work is not cheap. But neither are the top luxury bags — Hermes, Chanel, Dior, Prada, et al. If you are buying these brands, then you can afford bespoke.

Duret and Nitz are at the top price wise, but these makers are located in Paris and Zurich, very high priced cities. Both makers are at the top of their game. The cost for these bags reflects those factors.

I have not worked with Duret, but Nitz’s prices range from about $4K for a Flaxton in leather to $50K for a butterfly bag in Croc.

Lili Storella (Mila Jito) is located in rural New Hampshire. She does not have the years of experience under her belt as Nitz or Duret, but that does not mean her craftsmanship is any less than Duret or Nitz.

Her bags range from $5.5K to ~$15K for croc.

Jetalla Anieu is in Indonesia. And she is a relative newbie. Her bags are remarkably well priced under $3,500 for normal leather bags.

Aesthetically, Nitz is the most refined and imaginative. The butterfly bag, while ultimately not my style, is a masterpiece of design. The Flaxton is similar in design and use as an Hermes Evelyne, BUT improves on all the drawbacks of Evelyne. If anyone wants an extremely wearable and usable bag at a good price point, the Flaxton is the way to go.

Mika Jito’s aesthetic is bold, casual, and perhaps a touch chunky. She has no mini or micro bags. 25mm Mirius or Dearling is as small as she goes. If you haul around stuff or like big bags, Mila Jito’s your creator. Her new Dearling design is jaw dropping. I have a Dearling that will be done next Spring. My Wander bag will deliver around January 1, 2025.

ETA: Mika Jito does have some smaller bags!

Jetalla Aneiu principally works with the trapezoidal shape of a Kelly bag with her Natalya bag. It is way easier to open and close as opposed to an Hermes Kelly. I have a 21cm horizontal version that I got as a going out, hands free bag. It serves its function very well. I have another 25 cm version on order that should deliver in February.

It’s fun to sell my Hermes and replace them with bespoke.

I love working with talented craftspeople and putting my hard earned money in their pocket instead of multinational corporations who could not give a rat’s a** about me.

My new Nitz commission is a Dawning Bag with Peanut Dalmatian leather with a Maize Chèvre interior. Peter managed to snag the last Dalmatian skin in this coloration.

As you can see, this bag is very elegant, usable, and refined.

Below is a pic of the bag and leather swatches.
